Hotel at a Glance: Rancho de los Caballeros

Set on 20,000 acres of desert wilderness just 70 miles from Phoenix, Rancho de los Caballeros has been bringing people closer to the cowboy lifestyle since 1948. This family-run luxury ranch has its own massive corral of ponies and lots of other activities to keep guests busy. Sip coffee on your room’s private sun patio before heading out for the day, or drive into historic downtown Wickenburg.

  • Ride ‘em cowboy: Learn to ride and drive the 100 horses at the resort’s corral; you can take lessons, pen horses, and go on trail rides.
  • Tee off on an 18-hole golf course with mountain views and putt past two lakes at an elevation of 2,100 feet.
  • Enjoy a full-course dinner with selections such as smoked-salmon crepes and key-lime mousse in the ranch’s dining room.
  • Relax with a hot-stone massage or a pampering facial at the onsite spa.
  • Things to do: Cool off in the pool or go on a skeet-shooting excursion.

Wickenburg, Arizona: Old Mining Town with Western Appeal

Wickenburg was a wealthy gold- and silver-mining town in the 1800s, attracting prospectors and outlaws like a magnet. These days, it’s a laid-back community with Old West–style main streets, a major attraction for day trippers from Phoenix. You can’t walk three steps in Wickenburg without seeing a historically significant building, house, or street. There’s even a historic tree—the Jail Tree, a 200-year-old mesquite tree that served as the town jail from 1863 to 1890 (outlaws were chained to it)

You can learn more about the history of Wickenburg at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. It houses an outstanding collection of gems and minerals, Western and Native American art, and an exhibit devoted to bolo ties, which are said to be a local invention. You can also indulge your own sense of desert adventure on the nearby Vulture Peak Trail, which winds through the cactus and sagebrush towards a stunning scenic overlook.
