Bend, Oregon: Year-Round Adventure in Cascade Range Mountains

Although gray skies loom over most of the Pacific Northwest, Bend averages 300 days of sun per year. Because of its warm, dry climate, high-desert terrain pervades the area in the form of thick juniper trees, arid winds, and snowcapped mountains. Imposing Mt. Bachelor tempts skiers and snowboarders with more than 70 powder-covered slopes.

In downtown Bend, travelers find a cluster of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. Instead of chain restaurants and big-box stores, visitors find one-of-a-kind nooks, including local microbreweries. Among the best of these is Deschutes Brewery, which has earned acclaim from both beer-festival judges and local sippers (read our interview with Deschutes brewmasters). The award-winning Obsidian stout encompasses notes of chocolate, espresso, roasted malt, and black barley. A passion for beer pervades the city; it's not unusual to catch sight of the Cycle Pub, a mobile keg on wheels propelled by up to 14 customers pedaling through the downtown streets.

Typical red lion bit their advertised EV chargers are not powered. Typical red lion. Clean and comfortable. Nothing fancy. Good breakfast.. Near bend and multiple highways. Dog friendly. Landscaping a bit sparse compared to the locale (not counting highway). Only problem is they advertise EV chargers and while they exist they aren’t powered on, so therefore they are useless. If you don’t need to charge a car and you like red lions, stay here.

Red Lion - Excellent Experience I recently hosted an event at the Riverhouse convention center and used the Red Lion for overflow lodging. I received very positive reviews from those who stayed there. I was very impressed with their staff’s professionalism as well as all the amenities you would expect. The staff were also very friendly and helpful - providing advice on local restaurants. The location is great, they offer a free breakfast, and the updated rooms are clean and comfortable. I will definitely use them again. Additionally, the hotel was very quiet during our stay, in fact the parking lot had several police cars parked as guests!

Avoid One reason it’s not the lowest rating is the food. Breakfast is decent. The door had a notable gap in the bottom and edge. Cold air, light, and noise from the busy roadway were not acceptable. There was one pretty disruptive patron at the hotel while we were there and staff seemed complacent.
