Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. “Keep Austin Weird” is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city’s nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America’s Best Music Cities, calling it the “mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types.” Stubb’s Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg. In addition to the live entertainment taking place on a nightly basis, two massively popular music festivals—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—draw in huge crowds each year.

Fantastic staff and sites. We were originally booked for Memorial Day weekend at another RV park but when we got there it was obvious that it was not the place the showed online. We were also attending our granddaughters graduation. We called a couple of others with no luck and then Redbud Ranch. Explained our situation and they made room for us . Not only did they give us a perfect site it had a great yard for spending time with our family. They knocked it out of the park and we will definitely be returning often. Thanks Redbud Ranch for what started awful and making it a 10.

Great park, location, and people We stayed with Redbud Ranch from the end of October '22 until after New Years '23. This was our 3rd stay and today I am finally getting around to bragging on them. Shame on me. The first thing you see is a very clean, well-kept park. Next, you meet the staff checking you in which is always pleasant. Registration is in their well-stocked convenience store (e.g. beer/wine LOL). Sites are clean and not as small as some where we've stayed. Amenities include a spacious pool, a hot tub, community fire pits and BBQ grills, a huge dog park, and acres of open grassy area along Brushy Creek. Only changes I'd make are to add more adult activities and to make the site #s visible from the street. It is no problem finding your spot but once you have parked, you block the view for anyone, like the pizza guy, from seeing the site number.

beware of trains Sadly, and I don't write negative reviews ever (think this is my first) I cannot recommend this place to anyone who wants a full night’s sleep (let alone a good night's sleep) ... the resort is new and lovely, the pool and play area are the best I have ever seen, the cabins are gorgeous, the staff are incredibly friendly, kind and helpful.... BUT.....the owners have built this RV park directly adjacent to the loudest train track ever with a crossing at the entrance. The trains run every few hours, day and night and each and every time as they approach the crossing, they sound their extremely loud horns! We did not have a decent night's sleep the whole time we stayed.. I had read reviews before which mentioned the trains but honestly did not think they could be this bad - they really are awful. Such as shame as the resort itself is lovely ...
