Downtown Boston: Revolution-Era Landmarks and Modern Skyscrapers

Downtown Boston is home to one of the country’s wackiest city layouts. Its colonial-village lanes converge, split, and take hairpin turns, creating a maze of cobblestone that, though frustrating for drivers, makes for a fun walking experience. If you’re visiting for the first time, the best way to navigate the area is to follow the 2.5-mile-long Freedom Trail, which takes you past 16 historical landmarks, including Paul Revere's home, Old North Church (of “One if by land, two if by sea” fame), and Faneuil Hall. You can use Boston public transportation to explore the city if you tire of walking. Since the area is also the city’s financial district, centuries-old fixtures share sidewalk space with modern 40-story office towers. You’ll find suit-clad professionals grabbing lunch on Washington Street, which is lined with street vendors and flower shops. Downtown is also where you’ll find several of the city’s quirkier neighborhoods, such as the Leather District. With its rustic warehouses, the neighborhood is the closest example of what the business center looked like in the 1800s.

There Was Room At This Inn My brother and I checked in on December 23. We got accessible suite 105. It had two bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen and dining area, and a living room, plus three TV sets. The breakfast was superb, and the whole staff was friendly and helpful from check-in to checkout. There were a couple of minor problems. Guests on one of the upper floors banged on the floor, but eventually stopped. Also, while looking for my stylus, which I found, I saw a mysterious pill under my bed. Knowing that it wasn't one of my meds, and not knowing how long it had been there, I just tossed it. Aside from that, everything was clean and cozy. Finally, kudos to the staff for the way they dealt with a food package that was delivered there yesterday, two days after checkout. Instead of my brother and I picking it up, they donated it to a poor family or a charity. It was the merriest Christmas my brother and I had.

Needs to improve We have been coming here several times a year for the last couple of years as my son is at a local college. Initially, we enjoyed staying, the rooms are comfortable and well equipped, plus this is a dog friendly (albeit for a fee) hotel. Our more recent stays the place is is showing signs of not being well maintained or managed. Staff no longer seem to recognize my status on check in, people are frequently smoking in the area by the front door. Arriving to a haze of cigarette smoke is not a great experience. Paint is peeling in rooms, there were holes that were badly repaired, and there were hairs in the bathroom. Guests were clearly smoking in rooms on our floor. Many kitchen items were missing and furniture had wear. Overall this place seems to be slipping. I mentioned it to staff and they said its been bad around here lately. Unclear what that means, but things need to improve. There are newer hotels options from a competitor near by.

Good value hotel for a Boston trip The hotel is clean and comfortable with a nice breakfast included. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The hotel has convenient nearby access to MBTA. The hotel is near grocery shopping (Stop and Shop) with nearby highway access to Premium Outlets Mall.

Avoid room 225, its either haunted or inhibited by strange animals(?!) I rarely write reviews (especially negative) but my friend and I had a very disappointing experience here this past Fri. We chose this location b/c it was 15 min from xfinity center and we were in town for a concert. When we first checked in, we noticed that we would likely not be using the shower as it had a very noticeable orange rust stain in the tub and the tub was constantly dripping. We tried to do the best we could to tighten it but there was obviously something broken so we decided to avoid using it entirely. No big deal. We went to pull out a bowl to put out some salsa and noticed the dishes in the cabinet had been put away dirty and there was food stuck between the bowls (gross but no huge deal here, we washed a bowl well and carried on..) it wasnt until the experience we had at 1:15 AM that we were truly uncomfortable. We were about to fall asleep and heard a loud rustling sound coming from the window. It was very loud and it was obvious that it wasnt coming from the vent or the AC, but inside the room. Upon getting up to investigate we were freaked out to see there appeared to be something moving quickly behind the long window curtain--something was rustling and this went on for several minutes. Whatever this was came with an unfamiliar squeaky growl, so needless to say we both were very freaked out and ran down to the front desk. We told the front desk attendant what happened (and reassured him that we were not crazy or on drugs) & stated that we were obvi uncomfortable staying in that room and asked if we could pls switch to another room. He offered to investigate himself but said we couldnt switch as they didnt have anything else available. Of course, when we went back up there w/ him to check it out, there didnt seem to be anything behind the curtain or anything odd in the room (so I'm sure we just looked crazy) and there wasnt much he could do. We heard the weird sound once more about half hour later and contemplated leaving at 2AM but were both exhausted so decided to stay and attempt to sleep but both of us were unsettled by the whole thing and still to this day have no clue what was in the room with us. If we didnt see the curtain physically moving around by itself we would have been able to accept it was possibly a mouse or animal in the wall - we barely slept b/c we were convinced either an animal was going to spring out and jump on the bed or that we were dealing with a strange paranormal entity(??!) - either way we will be avoiding this location in the future. I travel frequently for work and always stay at Marriott hotels and never had anything this bizarre take place!

Disgusting and dirty—avoid this place This was the most disgusting, run-down, dirtiest hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The first room smelled like dirty feet, so I moved to another one. That room was better, but there were stains and pubic hairs in the bed. The silverware, knives, and plates were caked in dried up food. The bathroom sink was clogged so it’d fill to very quickly. The shower only had one temperature: scalding hot. I cancelled the next night and checked out a day early. The staff was ok, but they didn’t offer any credit or partial compensation Avoid this hotel if you can.
