North Philadelphia

North Philadelphia is most notable as the home of Temple University. The university was founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell, a minister who started out tutoring a dozen students in night school. Today, nearly 40,000 undergraduates are enrolled at Temple, which U.S. News and World Report ranked among the country’s top 200 institutions of higher learning in 2015.

Head south to find the historic Center City neighborhood, which dates back to Philadelphia’s founding in 1682. The main attraction here is Independence National Historical Park; its high concentration of notable landmarks makes it America’s most historic square mile. While you’re here, visit Independence Hall—the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution—and head to the Liberty Bell Center. At the north end of the park, the National Constitution Center features a multimedia presentation on the country’s founding displayed on a 360-degree domed ceiling.

Avoid Staying in This Hotel No bar of soap in bathroom to wash hands— luckily, I had one in my travel bag. Upon check-in, I asked for housekeeping service since we were staying 2 nights. My husband also requested housekeeping at the front desk when he went for coffee downstairs the morning of our second day. We we gone most of that day, returning after 4 pm. After repeated, unanswered calls to the front desk, I went downstairs where 2 staff people were busy on their phones, ignoring me. After about 2 minutes, I loudly said “hello”. I stated that we, minimally, needed fresh towels & washcloths. One staff member asserted that “housekeeping wasn’t finished and then was argumentative when I suggested that an apology was in order instead of an argument. We had a dinner reservation, so we left. No clean towels in our room when we returned. My husband went down to the desk with our dirty towels and returned with clean towels. As a Titanium Bonvoy member, for many years, we’ve stayed extensively in Marriott properties throughout N. America, Europe & Asia. This is the worst Marriott property (with the most surly staff) that we’ve experienced anywhere in the world. It’s appalling that there appears to be no training about the way one should treat guests. Moreover, no one answering the front desk phone is a safety issue!

Deteriorating and Disappointing Have stayed here many times in the past due to location, but was unprepared for the steep drop in the wear and tear/upkeep at this hotel recently. Virtually everywhere is threadbare, torn /worn out and stained carpets. Corners of the rooms and stairways are not deeply cleaned. Breakfast is the usual fare, but they often have no coffee or only cold coffee, and often only one coffee container- no decaf or hot water. ( How can you have no hot coffee at breakfast for a hotel this size?) Seems like management doesn't care and is running this place into the ground. But what frosted me most was hotel employees taking the best parking places in front of the entrance doors- reinforcing the lack of management interest here.

My Stay Was Terrific! The bad reviews I read prior to going made me concerned. I was shocked and thrilled that my experience was nothing like the reviews. While my room could use some cosmetic updating, it was extremely clean and was well equipped. The staff was exceptional and the free breakfast had a lot of options and was very good. I will definitely stay again. In fact I rebooked a room for this Saturday night.
