Mexico's Riviera Maya: Rich with History and Tropical Calm

Just south of Cancún, the Riviera Maya is a nearly 80-mile stretch of Caribbean coastline fronted by towns rich in Mexican culture. For some of the area’s best beaches, clubs, and snorkeling reefs, head to the rapidly growing city of Playa del Carmen. Farther south, Tulum sits on a perch of rocky bluffs and is better known for ancient ruins, including temples and a cliff-side castle. The inhabitants of Tulum—which means "walled" in the aboriginal language—first erected the city's outer fortress to protect themselves from belligerent invaders. Today, the wall guards the archaeological zone, beginning with an entryway of two corbel arches and a limestone house built over an underwater cave.

Swimming in the secret caves isn’t allowed, but a scenic drive south of Playa del Carmen brings you to the Yucatán Peninsula's legendary limestone cenotes, fresh water sinkholes created by an underground river system. At the Cenote Cristalino, you can jump from terraced outcroppings into an exposed pool or go snorkeling in underwater caves. You can also watch locals expertly flip, dive, and synchronously cannonball into the clear water at this popular weekend hangout.

This is a three star hotel at best The hotel reviews and photos are misleading, as we discovered after booking a week in a penthouse suite. Here is an honest assessment: Pros: The property hosts monkeys and other wildlife, features multiple pools, and boasts a pleasant beach. Cons: The rooms are outdated with many broken or chipped items, dirty grout and mildew in the bathrooms, and uncomfortable beds. Despite having a full kitchen, there were no cooking or eating utensils provided. The buffet food was constantly plagued by flies and gnats. A group of 10 of us fell ill with stomach problems. The alcohol was watered down, and the incessant pressure to buy time shares was off-putting. Overall, considering the price, it's advisable to seek accommodation elsewhere that places a higher emphasis on cleanliness and customer service. This hotel warrants a rating of 3 to 3.5.

we will never visit this resort again. We started our trip 23 to the 29. the beds were so hard and they had no hot water. we complained and had the maintenance guy come and service it the last day we were there. we bought the most expensive pent house with 3 rooms and they did not treat us with respect. the bar tenders except (alex who is great) were so rude and disrespectful. the waiters will treat you horrible if you don’t have the proper attire. they didn’t have the elevator working in villa 18 and they served us nachos with no cheese for room service. made us get sick from cold water. the ceviche spot on the beach the cooks are super rude. terrible experience. leaving with the worst vacation ever

Too spread out!! This resort is average. We took our family of 5 the week of July 12,2024. We had the two bedroom penthouse epic room. The rooms are extremely nice. If it was just the rooms I would have given this resort 5 stars. The rooms where very spacious and the cleaning staff was extremely nice and helpful. Our family travel to enjoy the beach. This beach is very subpar. Its very small and rocky. The resort has put large bags of concrete about 30 yards out in the water to create a swimming zone. This blocks the view. The beach is also not private. There were many locals on the beach that set up tents, playing music and leaving trash on the beach. I would give the beach 1 star. The food was very good. There are several restaurants to choose from. Our favorite was the Italian. But, the Tai and French were a close second. However, these restaurants are very small and hard to get reservation. (hint if you do not have an epic room you can not even make reservations and your wait would be 1-2 hours) I would give the restaurants 4 stars Total resort. This resort is very spread out. Most rooms have a 5-10 min walk to the beach. I doubt any have a view of the ocean. The pools are very nice but tucked very close to the rooms. Therefore, there is not much breeze around the pools. I would give the pools 3 stars.

Overpriced, overrated, outdated. Booked Epic Member with a Penthouse suite and firstly the good part is the beach pool and multiple restaurants. Other than that you just start complaining after the honeymoon phase of the first 2 days. Our room flooded multiple times when it rained (sliding glass doors just leak through in every room) and the staff were notified immediately and didn’t send someone to clean the mess for multiple hours both times. Writing this review in the room as puddles surround me. Our “butler” hector is a great guy but man they don’t care that this stuff happens to you; all they did was take off our expenses for the trip (1 spa, Marley coffees, any extra purchases) which equaled our to about 450$ which is practically nothing compared to the inclusive room costs. So what would they have done if we didn’t do any of that? No idea because they refuse to refund any inclusive purchases even if someone canceles months in advance btw because we had that happen. Next up the bartenders are rude and poor like crap, I bartended in college and 3/4 full cup of anything is a sin, most of the young bartenders didn’t even know how to make a margarita. Spa is a separated hydroplung room for men and women so my parents didn’t like that experience and mom had paint chips floating in the cold plunge. Overall the room is the worst part, no hot water in my parents room but scolding hot water in my room, no water pressure in the sink in my room but water pressure in my parents sink, tv’s barely work, the rooftop hot tub had paint in it from the obvious repainting that recently happened, and the hot tub leaked out the side onto the rooftop if you drained it. So pretty much if your cool with staying in a mediocre room with okay amenities then your looking at the right place. Go to anywhere else imo, not worth the money.

Can’t wait to go back! Went to the resort for a wedding and it was amazing! Best food that I have ever had at any resort! I love the restaurant choices and the food quality. Not your typical resort! The rooms were spacious. The resort had great amenities, a nice spa and helpful staff. I can’t wait to go back!
