Snowshoe, West Virginia: Mountain Village Founded by the Father of Southern Skiing
Thomas "Doc" Brigham saw Snowshoe Mountain as a way to give skiing to the South. He founded Snowshoe and its eponymous resort in the 1970s; it remains a prime southern skiing destination and gateway to the great outdoors today. In winter, zip down dozens of ski trails, some featuring a 1,500-foot drop. In warmer months, you can hike over 900 miles of quality trails, including the Greenbriar River Trail. Seneca Rocks lies 60 miles to the north of the village and poses a popular challenge for rock climbers as the only true peak on the East Coast. Snowshoe itself serves as home to regular summer festivals as well as motocross and mountain-biking competitions.
