Rio Frio, Texas: Majestic Scenery in Texas Hill Country
Rio Frio is so small that it’s unincorporated, a tiny community located about 100 miles northwest of San Antonio. There’s no shortage of things to do in the area, however—visitors come for the gorgeous, lush scenery of Texas Hill County, which is unlike anywhere else in the relatively arid state of Texas. Beautiful rolling hills are cut by rivers like the Frio, and you can take kayaking, hiking, and birding tours led by experienced and local guides all year long. Check out the nearby Lost Maples State Natural Area or Garner State Park for hiking, biking, fishing, and sightseeing along its twisting trails, and revel in this rare Texan spot where all four seasons occur.
If you’re a fan of motorcycling, taking the Twisted Sisters trails through the area, make sure to stop at the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum in close by Vanderpool, where you can see an extensive collection of cycles dating from the 1910s to the present day. In the towns that are a quick drive from the River Bluff Cabins, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, from laid-back biker bars to homey cafes and upscale dining rooms.
