Dominica: Misty Mountains in the Lesser Antilles

Dominica is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors (like Barbados and Saint Kitts), but that has its benefits. The island has been spared the brunt of heavy tourism, which has kept its lush rainforests pristine. The landscape is still being formed by geothermal activity, such as that on display in the Valley of Desolation. An arduous 6-mile trek through the valley brings you to Boiling Lake, the second-largest of its kind in the world. Its waters bubble at a startling 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

Don’t worry though—Dominica is also dotted with beautiful waterfalls and sandy beaches perfect for swimming. The aptly named Emerald Pool surrounds visitors with rainforest greenery, and swimmers at Champagne Beach feel a continuous flow of bubbles rising from the Caribbean Sea’s floor. Head to the capital city of Roseau on the island’s west side to see French colonial architecture and the famous botanical gardens.

sweet hotel and staff We loved staying at this property. It's on the other side of the mountain from the main town but well worth the stay there as it's probably one of the nicest properties on the island. It's right on the beach and the way it's built seems to blend so nicely with the natural beauty of the area. The activities director sought us out at our first breakfast and gave us great advice to visit 4 waterfalls right in that area - all short drives from one another. The first one was a hike thru the jungle (you'll need to hire a guide and there are typically guys that will wait near the parking area to help you find it- just give them $5-10). The trek thru the jungle and across the river and up to the falls is a memorable hike and the falls are truly amazing- so powerful the wind actually pushed us backwards. The other 3 falls in the area are beautiful and only had a few people there - one had none so we had it all to ourselves to swim and lounge. There are quite a few beaches to drive to and it's just a gorgeous area of the island. The food at the restaurant is amazing- they went out of their way to create memorable meals for us. I'm vegetarian and there were quite a few delicious choices. My friend eats everything and her meals were scrumptious too. The staff is so kind and thoughtful and we had an amazing time. Please note- they were hit by Hurricane Maria so I'm sure once they are back open, it would really help to have people book here.

A wonderful stay with a great view In summary, this was one of the best resorts we have stayed in. The staff overall were excellent, the food was good and reflective of Dominican cuisine, and the accommodation and views the best. The service we received was very good. The staff were genuinely polite and interested in you. They always greeted you (typical of Dominicans anyway). It would be unfair to name anyone in particular but the bar staff, the cook and the gardeners all stood out for us. We stayed in one of the Oceanfront rooms. The room we had had a very nice décor with lots of space for all our belongings and an excellent bathroom. The verandah looked out on to a view that I can only describe as one of the best. It looked out onto the Atlantic ocean. Waking up to that everyday and relaxing by it at night was a privilege and something to be savoured. One of the centres of activities was the swimming pool where we met people from various nationalities. And we made a few friends. Nothing is perfect. The few problems we had with the room such as a failed lightbulb and non-working fridge were quickly resolved and an example of their customer service. The lady who led the yoga was a joy and a very interesting woman. We all enjoyed the yoga and if you decide to do any of the long walks, yoga will help with the preparation. The tour guides knew their stuff. And are always willing to engage in conversation to impart their knowledge and to hopefully make your stay all the more enjoyable. We did the Boiling lake tour and it was made all the more achievable by their leadership. There are more things I could mention that helped to make the stay enjoyable but hopefully the above gives you a flavour. I have already mentioned how the resort sought to remedy things quickly. The areas that could be improved centres on keeping customers updated. We wanted to see the turtles but a misunderstanding between the turtle organiser, reception and us meant that we missed this opportunity. That said, we enjoyed our stay. The room, the view, the staff all made it one of the best vacations we have had in a resort, and that was enough to give it five stars. Would we go back. Of course!

In heaven We stayed at Rosalie Bay resort in June this year. We were given a beautiful suite overlooking wild palm trees and the Atlantic Ocean, truly heavenly! The Ocean was wild and sadly not safe enough to swim, but the respire pool was lovely as was 'messing about in the river'. We were given a very warm welcome by the lovely staff at the resport, in fact everyone there could not have been more friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was good, and I would recommend booking dinner, bed and breakfast as there are few other places to eat, buying dinner was quite expensive, given the current exchange rate. Guided walks round the resport are very good and interesting, and turtle watching is a real privilege. Dominica is a wonderful island with the loveliest people, all completely unspoilt.
