Hotel at a Glance: Ruidoso River Resort

The Ruidoso River Resort is a retreat to nature—just outside the windows and balconies of this all-condo resort is the rushing Ruidoso River, which winds down from the forests of the Sacramento Mountains. Guests can take advantage of the outdoors by hosting a cookout on the resort’s seasonal gas grills, enjoying family time or making friends with fellow travelers. And they can even stop by a nearby attraction—a forest preserve, antique shop, or maybe a winery—before heading back to a condo outfitted with leather furniture and wood trimmed accents.

  • Surf the web using the resort’s free Wi-Fi.
  • Hike the mountains or bike a trail in the nearby Lincoln National Forest.
  • Watch the river rush by, from the viewpoint of the resort’s greenery-filled outdoor courtyard.
  • Fire-up a grill and cook some barbecue on one of the outdoor gas grills available for guest use.
  • Ski the slopes or glide down on a snowboard at the nearby Ski Apache.

Ruidoso, New Mexico: Gems, Forests, and Caves in Nature’s Playground

Residents of Ruidoso have called it “nature’s playground,” and it’s hard to argue when you see the sun shine over Lincoln National Forest and the peaks of the Sacramento Mountains. On the area’s many mountain biking paths, such as the 17-mile Rim Trail, you can get beautiful views of the surrounding forest. Fishing is plentiful, too, especially in the Ruidoso Rio or Cedar Creek. The nearby Fox Cave—home to radiant gemstones such as amethysts, Ruidoso garnets, and even rubies—was once the hideout of legendary gunslinger Billy the Kid.

The outlaw is the partial inspiration for Ruidoso Downs Race Track And Billy The Kid Casino, one of the area’s biggest draws. It has up to 13 races a day during the season and is home to over 300 slot machines.

Five Stars Plus (and also a little bit Minus) The resort is beautifully situated and centrally located. The apartment was well-laid-out, spotlessly clean, and extremely comfortable, with high ceilings, good atmospheric lighting, several nice area rugs, attractive furniture, a gas fireplace, and a large well-equipped bathroom with a washer/dryer unit in an adjacent closet. We didn’t use the kitchen much, but there was every pot, pan, dish, cup and glass anyone could ever want along with a good set of knives and other food prep tools, even herbs and spices. The windows in our unit (3-305) were well soundproofed (not that there was any need) and overlooked a rushing stream that made an excellent sound backdrop. The balcony was good sized and had chairs and a dining table. Heating worked fine and based on that we assume the A/C would too in warmer weather. Extra touches included good bedside table lamps for reading, more than enough electrical outlets, and very fast internet. I will say that from our standpoint, the king-sized bed was too soft, but I realize people have different preferences in that regard. The final point I’ll now discuss at some length is why I put both the “plus” and the “minus” in the title. The plus: the resort has clearly articulated rules in terms of social gatherings, quiet times, guests, music, post visit clean-up, and every other conceivable matter. From our perspective, that was a very very very good thing, but the resort is clearly not a place where people who like to party hard will want to stay. The minus: I repeat that we had no issue with any of the rules, but the way they were spelled out in the rental agreement seemed legalistic, excessive and even a little creepy. The agreement, which was sent in electronic form attached to an email *after* the payment transaction was completed, was several pages long and required initialing in several places and a signature at the end. The initialing related to each “set” of rules. And then there was this: “There will be NO refunds to LEASING TENANT due to ANY breakdown of appliances, HVAC systems, TVs, other appliances or other [ . . . ] equipment.” Really? If I can’t occupy my room because it’s below freezing inside, surely I should be entitled to receive a refund, right? Clearly, the owners of the resort have a very competent legal team at their beck and call. It wasn’t a big thing, but I did leave feeling a little like a schoolchild who might have been scolded if I had transgressed . . .

A++++++ When in Ruidoso, staying at Ruidoso River Resort!!! The rooms were perfect! Well decorated and clean! Had a porch which was private and great view! The grounds are beautiful with a fire pit lit every night and 3 grills available! Accepted pets which we just couldn't find anywhere else in Ruidoso. Within walking distance of the shops and next to the river.

Wonderful Stay! What a great place to stay in Ruidoso! We stayed in a one bedroom, one bathroom, 2 person condo. We were on the second floor and faced the river (really more a stream). The condo was very clean and the kitchen had updated appliances and everything we needed to cook. The unit was nicely furnished and the bed was comfortable. The unit felt very spacious and having a washer and dryer was so nice. The folks at the front desk were very nice and helpful. The unit was very quiet but due to the time we went (first week of January) the complex was not at all crowded. We have found the place we will stay each time we visit!

Amazing experience and well worth a visit anytime of the year. The Ruidoso River Resort exceeded all of our expectations. It is a very high-quality resort, and all the facilities are exactly what you would want for your visit. I felt as comfortable in the Rio Ponderosa as I do at home. The resort as well as our rooms were well-maintained and clean. The view of the morning Elk migration was amazing.

Pleasant experience. Very Private Very clean and well maintained. Very helpful staff. Kitchen had plenty of utensils, dishes and cooking pots and pans. Rules of the property are very reasonable requests. Provided coffee and tea. Nothing more. Location is great if you want to walk into town for meals or shopping. Nice to leave your car parked and not have to search for parking in town. Many places were closed in town due to a early week visit. It was not race season or ski season. That has nothing to do with the property except we were pretty much alone . Our unit was a two bedroom, two bath and it was very nice. Maybe one of the nicest we have stayed in. We did run out of hot water at bath time. But that happens. It was a nice stay.
