Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Very good hotel, only remarkable qualities The experience in this hotel is really good, we have no worries, everything was nearby, the staff team was friendly smiling, and they were really good, a beautiful view, a good casino, and many restaurants with direct access to the monorail, free parking.

Very Nice Property! The Sahara was a very nice property for the price we paid. It was modern, clean, and the staff were efficient and friendly. The location is very close to the Stratosphere. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are going to visit Las Vegas.

The BEST in Vegas! Don't stay anywhere else. We checked in April 8, 2025, and were way beyond pleased during our entire stay! First, let me start by saying this hotel is by far the cleanest property we visited during our 4-day Vegas trip. The casino area was not overwhelming with a sea of trashy drunks like other properties. No shabby interiors, no feeling like you got lured in by older photos on a website just to be let down by the present state of a place. The entire property was fresh and sparkling! Further, every part of the property attached to the resort was clean, well lit, and felt secure, including the parking area.! The housekeeping and janitorial staff do an amazing job keeping the entire property spotless and fresh. Our Marra King room was comfy and just the right spot to come back to rest and recharge. The hotel is conveniently located in a quieter part of the strip but right next to the Monorail and Duce Bus system, which we took full advantage of both to get around town and outside the strip. We also rented a car from the Enterprise located within the hotel for a day trip to The Valley of Fire, and having that available was beyond convenient! No hassle of getting to and from a rental location or airport. All we had to do was go downstairs to pick up the keys! We dined at Balla Italian Soul and fell in love with their delicious Italian meals. They also offer a special 3-course menu for Sahara guests, and we took advantage of that one night too. Everything from the warm olive appetizer to their house-made limoncello was amazing. Service was top notch too!! Zeffer's Cafe was the best breakfast spot we tried during our stay. Their Grand Marnier French Toast is quite possibly the best I have ever had. Everything was fresh and yummy. Sweet berries and whipped mascarpone left me not needing any syrup to finish each bite. The Walgreens next door was super handy for purchasing supplies at very reasonable prices during our stay. We stocked up on drinks, snacks, and personal care items without feeling ripped off by the prices elsewhere. I can't recommend going there for whatever you may need enough. Chickie's and Pete's was okay enough for what felt like a chain restaurant. If we had to do it over again, we would have dined at Balla Italian Soul that night because we didn't feel like it was worth all the hype given online. Sure the food was hot and filled the empty spot, but it wasn't anything more delicious than what you could get at a drive-through restaurant. Last but not least, the staff were all amazing. Everyone from the front desk to security to housekeeping was friendly and helpful. They all had smiles on their faces, which to me means a lot when I stay somewhere, because they all seemed to take pride in their service. All the staff should be commended for their part in a guest's experience because they make The Sahara shine brightly in the lights of Vegas. Moral of the long story: stay here, you won't be disappointed. We were happy to call this place home each day during our stay. :)
