Myrtle Beach, SC: The Grand Strand’s Crown Jewel

Stretching along South Carolina’s sun-kissed coastline, Myrtle Beach is the heart of the Grand Strand—a 60-mile sweep of golden shores that has drawn travelers for generations. Originally a retreat for lumber barons, the city blossomed into a beloved vacation destination, known for its pristine beaches, world-class golf courses, and the timeless charm of its iconic boardwalk. History comes alive at Brookgreen Gardens, where art and nature intertwine in a breathtaking display of sculpture and indigenous flora. Meanwhile, the Intracoastal Waterway invites adventurers to explore the region’s untamed beauty, from winding salt marshes to serene estuaries teeming with wildlife. Sand Dunes Resort - 1 Star (Generous!) - Run Away! Run Far Away! Do yourself a HUGE favor and book literally ANYWHERE else. Seriously, I'm writing this review as a public service announcement to save your vacation from becoming the soggy, disappointing mess that mine was at the Sand Dunes "Resort." Let's just break down this comedy of errors, shall we? First impressions? Park in the 15-minute zone for check-in! Felt less like hospitality and more like a high-stakes parking lottery. The check-in process itself was slower than molasses in January, and by the time we finally got our key, we'd already earned a passive-aggressive parking warning. Welcome to paradise! Then, the room. Oh, the first room. Let me paint you a picture: imagine walking into your bathroom and being greeted by a majestic, albeit unwelcome, waterfall feature cascading directly from the ceiling. Yes, you read that right. Our bathroom had its own indoor rain shower, completely separate from the actual shower. Charming! We called the front desk, who promised a callback that never came. Instead of, you know, calling, they told us to "come down." Because clearly, hiking back down to reception to explain our bathroom was now a rainforest is peak vacation relaxation. Room #2 (after the great bathroom flood of '24) wasn't much better. We booked and PAID for two queen beds. We got two… double beds. When I politely inquired about this at the front desk, I was met with an argument that would make a toddler proud. Apparently, "double" and "queen" are interchangeable terms in Sand Dunes-land. Who knew?! Next time I order a large pizza, I'll expect a small and see how that goes. Location, location, location! Ours was PRIME! Directly above the outdoor cafe! Which, delightful during the day, transforms into a karaoke bar of questionable talent until a solid 11 PM. Sleep? What is sleep? Apparently, at the Sand Dunes, sleep is a luxury only afforded to those with earplugs made of concrete. And the water park! Ah yes, the lure of the water park! We arrived on a Friday and stayed till Tuesday, excited for some aquatic fun. We even got wristbands on Monday! Wristbands for a water park that was as open as Fort Knox on a Sunday. Turns out, it's only open Thursday-Sunday. A minor detail completely absent from the website. It's like they enjoy the delicious tears of disappointed children. And adults, let’s be honest. The whole place felt like a ghost town during the week. Restaurants closed, atmosphere dead. Weekend warriors clear out, and so does any semblance of life. But wait, there’s more! For those seeking a truly immersive experience, I highly recommend the hot tub. If by "immersive" you mean "immersed in someone else's regurgitated lunch," then congratulations, you've hit the jackpot! Yes, folks, there was actual puke floating in the hot tub. I'm not kidding. I wish I was. My desire to relax in bubbling water evaporated faster than the puddle in our first bathroom. Finally, the pièce de résistance: toilet paper rationing. Asked for more? Denied! Apparently, toilet paper is a precious, finite resource at the Sand Dunes. Start practicing your seashell technique now, folks. In conclusion, the Sand Dunes Resort is less "resort" and more "cautionary tale." It's old, run-down, and staffed by people who seem actively opposed to customer satisfaction. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway, please, for your own sanity, choose literally anywhere else. You'll thank me later. And maybe pack your own toilet paper, hazmat suit, and industrial-strength earplugs. Just in case.

Nice Stay, Hate Parking Deck We had a 3 BR and 2 Bath unit. The unit was a great bargain for what we paid and was clean and comfortable. The location was good. The parking deck is super tight and makes you nervous every time you turn a corner since many people do not know how not to come barreling around corners like a bat out of Hades. Almost got hit by careless drivers twice. Otherwise, nice stay.

Good The location was good and we didn’t have any issues during our stay. Everything was clean and comfortable. The parking deck is very tight. We had a three bedroom and two bath condo. The price was good compared to other options and I would stay there again.

German Roaches and Nasty Conditions Nasty conditions with roaches dropping from the ceiling and in kitchen. Please do not stay here and they will scam and keep your money and they already know they have German roaches. Nasty blood on the curtains and broken dryers that fall apart when you try and use them. Will never bring my family here again! This deserves Zero stars for the nasty conditions.

If you like dirty room and poop on the walls this is the place for you. Our room, had a broken sink with brown water and brown stuff on the wall and towels. They couldn’t send maintenance up and told me changing rooms was a hassle. I left and went somewhere else. I’m not staying in a room with biohazard on the walls and the customer service was indifferent
