Hotel at a Glance: Santa's Lodge

It feels like it's Christmastime at Santa's Lodge, no matter what the calendar says. Inside the lobby, a 37-foot-high vaulted ceiling—hand-hewn from the timbers of a 19th-century barn that once stood on the property—soars over festive decorations, including Christmas trees, Santa Claus statues, a horse-drawn sleigh, and two stories worth of antiques. A stay at Santa's Lodge is the perfect way to get in the holiday spirit all year long.

Santa Claus, Indiana: Year-Round Festive Cheer in Historical Town

According to local legend, the early settlers of present-day Santa Claus had a problem: every time they agreed upon a name for the town, they’d discover it was already taken. In fact, the small community was known as the “nameless town” until Christmas Eve of 1852. On that wintry night, the villagers were debating names in a log-cabin church, when a gust of wind blew open the door. The unmistakable sound of sleigh bells could be heard over the falling snow. The children cried out, “Santa Claus!” and the town finally had a name. Each December, the Santa Claus Post Office is flooded with hundreds of thousands of letters addressed to ol’ St. Nick. Each letter received by December 21 receives a reply.

Naturally, the town—which is Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler's hometown—is a magnet for all things Christmas. Built in the mid-1930s as part of a now-defunct holiday theme park, Santa’s Candy Castle remains a local landmark. Here you can buy gourmet candy canes, hot chocolate, and other handmade confections. Pop into the Santa Claus Museum to learn more about the history of the town through documents, photos, and artifacts.

Charming and fun, comfortable bed. Breakfast was tasty!! I'm an overseas visitor, from Scotland. We really enjoyed our stay here! The decor is a little bit dated but I think that fits really well with the theme of Christmas. If it was modernised it wouldnt be as much fun. My son particularly enjoyed looking at all the Christmas decorations in the lobby and the room itself was very comfortable. The air conditioning was great! We had everything we needed. Highly recommend a stay here if you are in the area. The breakfast had the best waffles I have ever tasted in my life!

A local gem filled with the Spirit of Christmas What a beautiful local gem! If you are a thematic or a local loving traveler, you are going to love this lodge! The lodge is designed exactly how I would envision Santa and his elves would create a place for visitors. The owners have lovingly taken care of this property. The lodge has the feel of a state park lodge with rough hewn logs creating the main area and the furnishings in the room use the same theme. Visitors are surrounded by Christmas decor in the main lobby. Santa’s sleigh is there to climb in and take that Christmas photo. There are Christmas trees, garland, and wreaths, plus a nice Christmas scene with miniature houses. There is coffee available for those who need a quick caffeine fix during the day. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They are proud of their little resort and they want you to love it too! Since we were there during the peak season of summer, they had the full breakfast buffet in the morning in their restaurant downstairs included with your stay. They offered scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy, muffins, waffles, juice, milk, cereal, and coffee. It was a nice way to start the day. They have an indoor and an outdoor pool, but we had spent the day at Splashing Safari, so we didn’t use the pool. The lodge is just a few minutes down the road from Holiday World, so we actually came back and changed, had dinner at Fat Santa’s Pizza across the parking lot, and then went back for the light show at the park. We loved everything about our stay and it was made “top notch” by the quality of service that we experienced at Santa’s Lodge.

Christmas in July Getaway_ Stayed at Santa Claus Lodge while visiting Holiday World! The hotel is in definite need of some updating and fixing up the rooms! Offered a breakfast buffet and this lodge is within minutes of the Holiday World park. Lodge offers an outdoor and indoor swimming pool. We stayed mainly for the convenience to Holiday World as we was there from the time they opened til they closed!
