South Padre Island, Texas: Vibrant Marine Life and Educational Centers

South Padre Island isn’t actually an independent island—it’s the name given to the resort town on the southernmost point of Texas’s much larger Padre Island, which stretches nearly 130 miles along the Gulf of Mexico. The town is linked to mainland Texas by a single bridge, the Queen Isabella Causeway. Because it occupies such a narrow stretch of land—at its broadest point, South Padre Island is only a few blocks wide—getting from the Gulf on the east side to Laguna Madre on the other takes only about 10 minutes on foot. Many visitors spend their vacations laying out on the area’s sandy beaches, which are home to more than 300 types of waterfowl, lofty sand dunes, and the occasional kemp’s ridley sea turtle. Others set sail on fishing charters to seek out swordfish, redfish, and spotted seatrout.

On the northern end of South Padre Island at Sea Turtle, Inc., you can observe endangered kemp’s ridley sea turtles, which the organization rescues, rehabilitates, and releases at nearby beaches. Ila Fox Loetscher, affectionately known as “The Turtle Lady,” founded the nonprofit organization in 1977 after spending more than 10 years rehabilitating sea turtles in her South Padre Island home.

Opportunity for improvement We stayed here on July 18-22. First of all the resort has seen happier times. Don't go by the pictures here on tripadvisor. They are in the process of trying to convert the resort into a Holiday Inn. Everything has kind of a run down feeling to it here. We stayed in room 333 next to the beach. The room was somewhat clean however the bathroom needed some repairs...the bathtub would not hold water due to a broken drain as well with the sink...the toilet has also came loose from the floor. Our refrigerator did not work...we informed the front desk they sent someone to replace the refrigerator with another one that half way worked. The Mexican restaurant in the main building is a tourist trap....it doesn't cost 60 dollars to feed a family of three. They beach side restaurant is really good though. I think if they fixed the place up they could have a very nice resort...however currently it looks as if someone is milking every last penny out of the place before it is condemned. Also if have TMobile u will have a very weak signal in room 333.

Worst place ever ! I am sitting here on a Friday night at 8:30 and room is still not ready. They asked us to call to see if it would be ready after we ate dinner. No one is answering the phone. We walked property it is dirty and frankly disgusting. The pool with the swim up bar was green and no one was tending at 6 in the afternoon. So far worst experience. Will update with what I expect to be a sub standard cleaned room. Booked through American Airlines travel and they will be getting a call as well. Remove from list now.

Second effort ! We had a little problem with cleanliness in our first room. But it was resolved very quickly by giving us a new room by the Manager Daniel, “ a good guy” . The Hotel is actually two hotel buildings, the seaside hotel is a little aged and in need of a remodeling but right on the beach and perfect for families with kids. The second hotel on the city side is remodeled and definitely 5 star quality. The best thing about this Hotel is the service by the staff, so here’s a shout out to a few of the staff that went the extra mile in making our stay awesome. Maria and Abby in House keeping, and Miguel, Allison and Miren at the desk. I will definitely stay here again.
