Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West’s Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city’s Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you’re in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

Great studio on a beautiful resort This resort is well manicured with beautiful cacti and flowering shrubs. It is ideally located within a 1 or 2 from the Fashion Mall, Old Town and numerous restaurants. It was very easy to navigate with a car. My husband and I stayed for a week in a studio unit with a beautiful view of Camelback Mountain. The unit had a functional kitchen which included a smaller sized refrigerator, 2 burner cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, and a closet with a stackable washer and dryer. All pots, pans, dishes, bowls, pitchers, glasses, utensils were provided. Paper towels, sponge, dish washer detergent, dish soap were provided. There was a note indicating that if anything additional is needed in the kitchen, the office can provide it. There was a comfortable, king sized bed on the main level and a full bathroom with a double sink. Plenty of bathroom towels as well as 4 pool towels were provided. The toilet area and bathtub have grab bars. Ideally a couple can stay on the main level if mobility is an issue, however there is a room with a queen sized bed, 2 nightstands with drawers, a large closet, small closet for suitcases, a reading nook on the second level and a balcony with a table and chairs. There is a $25 resort fee which includes onsite miniature golf, movies, pool, etc. The Grille is an onsite restaurant/bar to grab a quick meal or drink (breakfast, lunch and dinner are served). This was quite handy one day when the weather was monsoon conditions. The main lobby has a small market where condiments, water, soda, wine, alcohol, snacks, etc can be purchased. We were asked to participate in a 20minute survey, NOT A TIMESHARE PRESENTATION, and then we were provided with a $25 voucher which could be used at THe Grille. We would highly recommend this resort.

.. My issue was with The Grille. They admitted that I was overcharged for my drinks. I was charged for virgin drinks for two dollars more than the exact same drinks if ordered as smoothies. She said her supervisor was the only one who could correct it and he wouldn't be available until three days after my checkout date.

Relaxing in the desert Friendly staff and a great pool and central location to downtown and Old Town Scottsdale made this a great trip. Remember to bring your own coffee, coffee filters and spices, etc if you plan on doing any cooking in the villa. Having a washer and dryer in the villa was great since we didn't have to fly home with dirty laundry. We would stay there again just during a different time of year when it isn't so hot.
