Cape Cod, Massachusetts: Quaint Villages, Protected Beaches, and Miles of Shoreline

In the late 19th century, Cape Cod began to blossom into a summer vacation destination as visitors swapped crowded coastal cities for the sandy shores of eastern Massachusetts. Today, the arm-shaped peninsula encompasses a string of idyllic fishing villages, rolling dunes, and 300 miles of sandy shoreline—and it’s still the place where many East Coasters choose to spend their leisurely summer days. Popular attractions include fresh-seafood restaurants, quaint stores, and bicycle trails, such as the 11-mile Shining Sea Bikeway that wends from North Falmouth to Woods Hole.

But there’s also plenty to do in winter, when the crowds are a lot smaller. On the uppermost tip of the Cape, the free-spirited art colony of Provincetown attracts visitors year-round. This is one of the best places to head for a vibrant nightlife scene—there are cabarets, bars, and lounges aplenty. Pop into the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to check out local artwork, both historical and contemporary. Farther south, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium houses 140 marine animals native to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region. You might even see marine biologists feeding the seals in the aquarium’s outdoor enclosure.

Great location excellent location. Great beach, very well kept. Water looked great. The best part was the check in . very efficient. Quick and friendly. Ample parking, and the grounds were good. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable.

Plusses & Minuses The hotel is at a very convenient location right on the beach, however it rained the two days I was there so I didn't go. On the plus side, I had the pool and hot tub to myself! The room was nice, but the bathtub did not drain properly and the bed was uncomfortable. I liked the fireplace and the room was very clean. I didn't eat in the restaurant so I can't give an opinion on the food. I don't think I would go in the summertime though, it seems like it would be very chaotic and crowded.

Over priced Bates Motel The pictures shown on line do NOT reflect the rooms we stayed in! Large group, we were supposed to get a discounted rate and didn't! Over $400 for one night and then they wanted to charge an additional $54 to park, also $60 put on hold on our credit card for what, I don't know. Night manager was very rude! Filthy, stained carpets in the halls, huge rolling bin filled with trash in black bags just left out in the hall near our rooms and it smelled! Towel bar fell off the wall when we used the towel, our toilet rocked and the room smelled musty and moldy, allergies were on high alert! Waiting to get into the function we stood on a soaking wet carpet and wa the ceiling onto us! When my friend went to bed the whole mattress moved and she fell on the floor! Our room was really bad and others were actually were worse! Too much to list. I took pictures because no one would believe this! This place was so bad I couldn't wait to leave! When we checked out and told the girl at the desk she could care less and the manager was not available. When I returned home I read tons of negative feedbacks on this place, I called the board of health and reported the unhealthy conditions, my head hearts, my throat hurts and my allergies are out of control. A friend that was staying there couldn’t breath and now we know why. On a positive note, we got a full refund for our room, others not as lucky. DO NOT STAY HERE! So many nice places on Cape Cod, no need to stay here.
