Hotel at a Glance: Sea Ranch Resort

Kill Devil Hills has been known as the birthplace of aviation since 1903, when the Wright brothers' first powered flight took place along its coast. But the sandy beaches here are also worthy of recognition. Sea Ranch Resort gives guests the best of both worlds: it's just steps from the Atlantic and conveniently close to other attractions including the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, the sand dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park, and several quaint seaside towns.

The Northern Beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks: Idyllic Towns, Sand Dunes, and Wright Brothers History

Dubbed the “East Coast’s recreational playground” by Frommer’s, the Outer Banks is a string of narrow barrier islands that hugs the northern coast of North Carolina. Vacationers have flocked to the islands’ postcard-worthy beaches and idyllic villages since the 18th century. The most northerly island in the Outer Banks, Bodie Island, is home to five such towns, known collectively as the Northern Beaches: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, where a large granite boulder commemorates the spot where the world’s first powered flight took off, in 1903. The memorial also includes replicas of the brothers' early gliders. Just outside the town of Nags Head lie some of the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Strong winds off the ocean constantly reshape the dunes and make the area a popular spot for hang-gliding and flying kites. Make the drive south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the many ships that have crashed into its dangerous sandbars during storms. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, whose iconic exterior is a swirl of black and white stripes.

Love sea ranch Love this place! The bistro has awesome food at a fair price. It's well lit and friendly staff. the location is right on the beach and the views are great. My kids love the indoor heated pool,it is perfect for bad weather days. This resort is close to food lion, target, duck donuts, wright bro museum and the dunes

“Resort” don’t bother. Stay anywhere else. DO NOT waste your money! This room was $330/night. Now I know why it’s non refundable. Dirty rooms, rude staff, no house keeping, dirty bathrooms, door lock was broken, possible blood stain in carpet, stained furniture. Stay at the days inn, a fraction of the cost and probably better quality. I should call the police and file a robbery report. Charging this much for this place is robbery. I’ve stayed at holiday inn express for $75/night with breakfast included, and that blows this out of the water. Stay anywhere else but here.

As long as you get the right room this is a great place at a good price. The view was fantastic with a walk out balcony. Other pluses were that we could cook our meals, we had a full size fridge, a small but serviceable washer/dryer, and a serviceable living dining room, full dish/pots set, dishwasher, coffee maker and silver wear. The minuses are the room 221's location. The area used to rinse off your feet was right outside the balcony. People looked in constantly. Not that we did anything but.... . The other bad thing was was the room is right next to the machinery area which causes a loud roaring sound at regular intervals all afternoon and an annoying hum anytime the elevator runs. Not a problem if you are out enjoying all the OBX things to do but if you are rained in, your day is ruined. The property could use better maintenance as the room's carpet needed cleaning. Beach sand is everywhere and all the mats needed cleaning. But bedding and towels were clean and everything you needed to keep clean was provided. Sea Ranch gets a four for it's pluses and can't get a five for renting a room with absurd noise problems.
