Chicago's Magnificent Mile: Upscale Boutiques and Historic Architecture

On Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, landmark skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Center and the Wrigley Building tower over the city's liveliest retail corridor. In total, this stretch of high-end real estate houses some 460 stores, ranging from exclusive designers such as Armani and Chanel to beloved brands including Apple, American Girl, and Gap. Double-decker buses and horse-drawn carriages circle the Chicago Water Tower, a limestone icon that survived the Great Chicago Fire, and droves of shoppers navigate eight levels of boutiques and cafés at the nearby Water Tower Place.

Lake Shore Drive runs two blocks east of Michigan Avenue. Travel + Leisure calls this stretch “the greatest architecture road on earth” thanks to the superstar skyscrapers lined up along the lakefront. Looming above them all, of course, is the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower)—the second-tallest building in the country. Runners and cyclists travel the adjoining Lakefront Trail throughout the year. A mile and a half north, crowds gather at North Avenue Beach during the summer to people watch, play volleyball, and listen to live music at beachfront bars. You can get to the beach (and practically anywhere else in the city) using Chicago's extensive public transportation system.

Great location staff was friendly and room was clean. But we were on the 11th floor and the elevator stopped working. The ice machine did not work either. The place looked much nicer in the photos.

Hot AC I expected old, run down, and no extras based on the price I booked it for, but this was worse. Number 1, the AC not working would’ve been better, it actually blew hot air. So when I got into the room the thermostat said 80. After turning the ac on, and lowering the temp I waited for it to cool down. Couple minutes later I checked and the thermostat was up to 82. I check the vents and it’s actually blowing hot air. I ended up turning the ac off, putting a roll of toilet paper to keep the window up a little. Ambien was the only reason I was able to sleep.

A bad experience. What a total dissapointment. Right now, we are waiting for some from the front desk to show up to collect our luggage from the storage room, as well as other guests too to be attended. Long wait, but no one at the front desk. We had no cleaning service for the 2 nights that we stayed, slippery bathtubs, so it´s no safe for elder guests and my room had a permanent water dripping sound from the air conditioning system. No nice smiles at the front desk. Never coming back.

This is why reviews are mixed I sleep in dozens of hotels a year, both for work and leisure travel. I seldom leave reviews. But opinions are so split on Selina Chicago that I feel compelled. First, I found it clean throughout. The common spaces were fun and quirky-- definitely not cookie cutter. As for the rooms, my room 608 was solid 4 star: great bed, fresh remodel. The only downsides were wall-to-wall carpeting that could use a refresh, and dated bathroom (clean, but with a 1970s style low wide toilet, etc). And a slow shower drain that left you in 3 inches of water after a 5 minute shower. That's always gross. I suspect opinions differ on Selina because it is essentially TWO hotels in one: a hostel and a hotel. These are separated by floor. The second floor has common areas incl small kitchen, "cinema room," meeting room, and bar/lounge area. If you're looking for a hotel (as opposed to a hostel-- I can't speak to that), ignore the negative reviews. This is a clean, charming, non-cookie-cutter 3.5 star hotel in a very convenient location (pro tip: Jeni's ice cream one block away has the BEST ice cream ever). and very reasonably priced for the neighborhood.
