Hotel at a Glance: Shelburne Hotel

After a remodel in 2018, the Shelburne Hotel now merges contemporary styles with those reaching back as far as the property’s opening in 1896. Sconces lit by edison bulbs hang on beadboard walls, and sunshine filters through antique stained-glass windows. Hexagon tiles complement the pedestal sinks and claw-foot tubs in some of the 15 rooms and suites.

  • $20 dining credit for the pub, valid toward dishes like a sandwich with fried Willapa bay oysters on housemade bread
  • Best way to start the day: free continental breakfast
  • Seasonal menus in the more-upscale dining room focus on locally sourced ingredients.
  • Signature drink: The Adrift cosmo is made with vodka and cranberry liqueur from the hotel’s sister distillery.
  • Hangout spot: The parlor has billiards and shuffleboard; there’s also live music most Thursday–Saturday nights.

Long Beach, Washington: Clams, Kites, and Cranberries on the Pacific Coast

About 115 miles northwest of Portland, 28 miles of uninterrupted shoreline stretches across the Long Beach Peninsula. Crowds flock to the area all year—even in the winter months, when average temperatures are in the 40s. The main draw during that part of the year is clamming. On certain government-approved dates, you can take to the sands to dig for fresh razor clams, which locals enjoy battered and fried in butter.

Kite flying is something of an obsession in Long Beach. The town is home to an annual kite festival as well as the World Kite Museum, dedicated to the art, history, and science of kite making. Another local obsession is cranberries—their bright-red bogs line the coast from Oregon to British Columbia. At the Pacific Coast Cranberry Museum in Long Beach, you can learn about the history of cranberry farming and tour a bog.

Great experience! Highly recommended! Just an awesome historic place! I will be returning! I truly enjoyed my stay at Shelburne. The room was cozy and quaint, room enough for three people although I was traveling solo. I stayed in the attic room #5. I loved all the personal touches such as the little info book about the history of the hotel, the ample soaps and towels and the comfy bed and mostly the quiet. To top off my stay, the staff was really quite friendly and knowledgeable about the area and other areas of the PNW and wrote me a tailored list of must-see places in the area. Can't say enough awesome things about this place.

Charming Inn Getaway We’ve stayed on the Peninsula many times, but this was our first time at the Shelburne. It was truly a delightful experience! From the complimentary champagne at check in, to the beautiful stained glass interior, to our clean and comfortable room, to the great dinners at the pub, to the pool and sauna and bikes at the adrift - we will definitely be back! Beach and antique store nearby was lovely . _

Beautiful and historic! My husband surprised me for our 20th wedding anniversary and took us here for 3 days. The room he booked for us was small and upstairs. However, a larger room downstairs became available and we switched. The lighting wasn't the best and there was definitely some wear and tear in our room. (a light bulb was out in the area with the tv, some "garbage" under the claw tub that wasn't cleaned, for example) The bed was super comfortable however and the stained glass windows are gorgeous! I loved the ambiance! We both love seafood and especially clam chowder. We had chowder in every restaurant we visited in the area. Unfortunately, the restaurant/pub here didnt serve clam chowder so we never ate there. I also had a visitor - yes, I believe I had a ghost visit! Just one of many cool things about this place.
