Redding, California: The perfect getaway for wildlife explorers

Stunning natural beauty meets modern architecture at Redding, CA. Surrounded by the picturesque Cascade Range mountains, it’s a perfect starting point for outdoor adventures, be it hiking, biking, climbing, or fishing. This former mining town was founded in 1872 and experienced an economic boom in the early 20th century, leaving the remnants of the former Central Business District of the nearby Gold Rush town of Shasta to this day. Visitors interested in history and architecture can’t miss the iconic landmark of Redding: the Sundial Bridge, designed by the world-famous architect Santiago Calatrava as the world’s largest working sundial. The nearby Turtle Bay Exploration Park offers a chance to get closer to nature with its numerous exhibitions that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Redding area features over 225 miles of hiking trails, with over 70 miles at the nearby Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The most popular one is the Sacramento River National Recreation Trail that leads adventurers from the Sundial Bridge to Shasta Dam alongside an abandoned historic railway.

The hotel was fabulous it was the booking through Groupon that was the issue. Apparently, the hotel never received communication of our reservation. And I never received any confirmation or booking number other than the one I had to find in the Groupon app. The hotel did a fantastic job accommodating us on our “lost” reservation.

Perfect stay for Mom with two teen boys Clean, comfortable, nice pool, great location next to the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay nature museum. Checkin staff was very helpful and kind, and maintenance staff arrived quickly to fix a clogged toilet. Club level breakfast was decent. On site restaurant quite good. We would stay here again.

Poor Customer Service and Management Booked our room a month in advance for our 10 year Wedding Anniversary. When we arrived I was informed they had over booked and did not have the room we booked available. We had booked and pre-paid for an upgraded room with a balcony. The rep said they couldn't accommodate our original reservation and gave us a standard room with no compensation/refund for the difference. It was the hotels error. The only thing they attempted to offer was another downgraded room and vouchers to their onsite restaurant which has poor service and the quality of food is less than mediocre, again another area where clearly management is lacking. I'm not interested. That's unacceptable and not a resolution. I have asked to speak with management and have gotten no where in the last 2 days. I am repeatedly told "there is no management on site but rest assured we will take care of this." No one is taking care of anything. In fact I've gotten a receipt to my email now 4 times for a charge they've processed multiple times to my room. The service is unacceptable and the lack of management present truly shows in how things are being ran. Thanks for providing a very poor stay for our 10 year Wedding Anniversary.

Uneven experience I stayed here twice in one trip - once on the way to Seattle, and once coming back from Seattle ( a month apart). I was traveling with my husband and dog and needed a stopping point on my way to Seattle from Southern CA. It's a long way to Redding and I didn't want to stay in a roadside motel. As other reviewers have noted, this is a short bit away from the I 5 and located next to a park. It was great to walk the dogs and get them out to stretch their legs. Our first night was seamless. We had our requested King bed and check-in was quick. The room was spacious with a nice window view. Because I had a good experience, I booked the hotel for my return trip. However, the experience was different. The line to check in was long and people weren't getting their requested rooms, or returning to complain about noisy rooms. At my turn I also learned my room reservation for a king was unavailable and I had to take a room on the first floor with two queens. I think the hotel may have suffered a A/C issue as a repair man was there and told my reception person that a AC person would be arriving soon. So, I understand those type of problems since the temp outside was over a hundred degrees. For the inconvenience, I was given access to the concierge level and vouchers for the restaurant to compensate for the room change. I appreciated this compensation. My 1st floor room was pretty dismal and smelled strongly of some type of disinfectant. The window looked out at a service entrance with imposing shrubs. Since I wasn't planning on spending a lot of time here, it was okay. However, I felt I was back to a roadside motel with this room. I probably could have paid a lot less for the hotels close to the road and had a more inviting room. Because of the location, and onsite restaurant, I might stay here again, but not sure I would accept a room I didn't reserve. Based on this experience, I will probably take a look at some other options that might be less pricey and offer a better room. At the end of an 8-10 day of driving, I look forward to a room that offers comfortable relaxing space that doesn't feel small and closed in. The Sheraton didn't quite meet a consistency standard with me in these experiences.
