Delaware’s small size belies its substantial importance to the Northeast region—Delaware was the first state in the union, for one, but it’s also been a center of business and industry for centuries. Wilmington, located near the Christina and Delaware Rivers, was founded by Swedish immigrants in the 1630s and became the headquarters of numerous large companies; many American corporate mainstays, including DuPont, still make their homes here today. The Sheraton Wilmington South Hotel sits just off of I-95 in New Castle, which means it has easy access to Wilmington’s historical sites nearby as well as the buildings of some native Fortune 500 companies.

New Castle, Delaware: 19th-Century Industrial History Along Scenic Riverfront
New Castle is a tiny town 6 miles south of Wilmington; this stretch of Delaware is rich in history. After being founded by Swedish immigrants in the 17th century, Wilmington eventually grew into an important center of commerce. You can learn more about the town’s long-standing industrial roots at the Hagley Museum and Library in the Brandywine Valley. The museum is the site of an early 19th-century gunpowder mill and the surrounding living community that was created by E.I. DuPont, the founder of what is now DuPont chemical company. At the 235-acre site, you’ll see old-fashioned steam engines, water wheels, and working mills, as well as preserved buildings such as the DuPont family home and the mill workers’ living quarters.
Wilmington is also known for its scenic riverfront, which is bordered by pathways and parks. Pack a picnic lunch, go for a stroll on the 1.3-mile trail, or climb aboard the moored Kalmar Nyckel, a replica of the European vessel that transported Wilmington’s first Swedish settlers and first batch of lingonberry crepes.
