Mammoth Lakes, California: Outdoor Sports and Hot Springs in the Sierra Nevada

Mammoth Lakes is a quiet California town high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains southeast of Yosemite National Park. It’s the main gateway to Mammoth Mountain resort, which is just a 10-minute drive from the center of town. The resort is home to the highest golf course in California and Mammoth Mountain Bike Park, which Outside magazine named the best bike park in the United States.

Though Mammoth Lakes is a natural playground for skiers and snowboarders, it’s a popular destination for fishing and hiking in warmer months. Convict Lake is well known for its mountain vistas and abundance of rainbow trout. The lake is circled by an easy 3-mile hiking path that reveals the mountains from all perspectives. The area’s geothermal activity supports a number of natural hot springs, which are great places to unwind after a day of exploring the wilderness.

The hotel is old and the bathroom in room 238 wasn't clean when we got there. Paint was peeling off and I thought laundry machine was free but it sucks. I spent pretty much $20 to wash 2 cycles each. The game room is only available a few hours but in a separate building.

Overpriced and worst hotel stay in the Eastern Sierra We were warned only after we booked a deluxe King room that the hotel was having its roof replaced and the landscaping redone through September 2024 when we received the confirmation email from the hotel (I booked through their website using my mobile phone). I had created an account online and booked through the Beyond Member Account account for "worry-free bookings" with a 24-hour cancellation however when I received the confirmation email, it indicated that there was a 48-hour cancellation period; therefore when I called to cancel, we were only within 24-hours and I was told I could not cancel without paying the full fee for 2-nights. The grounds looked bleak and unappealing - all dirt with no pleasant outside places to hang out. We were given a room on a hallway that was dark and dingy and smelled of mildew and like others have already reported, there was no WiFi connectivity in our room, which we only discovered after we had moved all our luggage and backpacks into our room. When we went to inquire about the WiFi issue, we were told that it sometimes doesn't work in that wing and they gave us a new room on a more brightly lit hallway that didn't smell but unfortunately the room smelled like mildew and cleaning chemicals instead but the WiFi did work in the room. But we still had to move all of our luggage and backpacks across the facility and they don't provide any luggage carts. We hoped that turning on the air conditioner and fan would help with the smell but it didn't and the air conditioner was loud and ineffective in cooling down the room. We had to pay the $25/day resort fee which supposedly included a complimentary craft brew at their bar but the person who checked us in didn't inform us as to how that worked so I went back to the front desk and we were reluctantly handed 2 tokens for a complimentary beer or cocktail. When I asked about the fact that we were paying daily for this, they reluctantly gave me another two tokens. Our stay was so bad that we left a day early, even though we had already paid for the room. It was too depressing to stay another night. This was one of the most inhospitable, smelly, and unattractive places I've stayed at in a long time, especially for the price.

Disappointing Im usually pretty easy going, go with the flow when things go wrong on travel, but there were too many things.. Positives - nice lobby lounge, free coffee, convenient location, crepe place nearby was good! Issues - very long check-in process - then key didn’t work, had to come back again right after - they could not find my booking from months ahead, was double charged, still waiting for a response from management. - put in a different room than what was booked, then charged more for that - hotel staff not listening or reviewing closely enough when I’m clearly showing them I’d already paid for the room. Too relaxed about issues happening. - we were there for a wedding, they had no hot iron or steamer available for our clothes when we asked. - spider and a dead earwig found in room - more of a motel if you are not staying in cabin units. Thin walls, could hear a lot from our neighbors For what we paid and what we got, really disappointing. Even more disappointing, the extra charge and having to continue to follow up with this place.

Not Great.... My wife and I stayed up there for 3 nights. We changed rooms 4 times. The third room they check us into I walked in on a guy in his boxers.... I travel for a living and this was the worst experience I EVER have had. If there was another place available we would have moved properties. They just switched management companies and it is a mess right now. From guest having confirmed reservation and their system not showing it. To just a lack of understanding of the property. It is still under construction but still charging $28 a day for a resort fee. Not all rooms have WIFI which is crazy these days. Very disappointed in our stay to sat the least. Was suppose to get an email from management but have not so letting everyone know. Location is good but so is a lot of other properties in the area. The 4th room they gave us was nice but changing 4 times rooms that many times did not make up for it. I come up there multiple times a year and will be looking elsewhere from now on.
