Dover, New Hampshire: Old Colonial Settlement on the Cochecho River

Dover, New Hampshire—the seventh oldest settlement in the U.S.—dates back to 1623, when a pair of fishmonger brothers set up camp on this patch of land near the Cochecho River. The town flourished during the 19th century as huge textile mills sprung up along the river and Cochecho Falls. Today, a stroll down the riverwalk’s cobblestone paths can take you past some of the former mills, many of which have been converted into restaurants, offices, and art galleries. You can see further evidence of Dover’s history at the eclectic Woodman Institute Museum: among its holdings are a saddle owned by President Lincoln, a stuffed cougar, and a 1771 tax bill from King George. The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is chock-full of hands-on exhibits that let kids man a submarine or dredge up dinosaur fossils.
