Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains: Downhill Skiing and Historical Towns

The Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania accounts for some 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The area has been a popular vacation destination ever since Pennsylvania Quakers opened a hotel here on the Delaware River in 1829. Today, the Poconos draw more than 25 million annual visitors, thanks to year-round recreational opportunities and spectacular natural scenery.

In winter, locals often make weekend trips from Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, and DC for one reason: skiing. One ski spot that's particularly popular is Camelback Mountain Resort, which sits atop one of the region’s tallest mountains and boasts 160 acres of skiable terrain. For an extended run, head to the Nile Mile, which drops 800 feet vertically over the course of a mile-long descent. The resort is also amply lit for night skiing, and is the only place in the Poconos with a halfpipe. After you're done hitting the slopes, take time to explore the handful of little towns nestled in the mountains. You'll find boutique wine galleries and historical mansions, including the late 19th-century Asa Packer Mansion.

What a dump!! My wife and I used to be owners in Willowbrook. You’d be hard pressed to find a parking space anywhere which meant everything was popular. As we moved out of State, we sold our timeshare and boy, am I glad. Willowbook buildings are run down and in need of repair to the sidings and a coat of paint. Inside the carpets have seen better days. Inside the units the dining room chairs are hard as a rock and heavily stained. Glassware and silverware were missing and not the right amount of towels were available. There were hardly any people at the lagoon, putt putt golf. We couldn’t wait to leave. We won’t be coming back.

Has potential but lacks where it needs fixing up. We came for the waterpark and some of the attractions were out of work The Queen Sweet does not mean a queen bed and nice view as other hotels normally do. Service was under staffed at desk and we had no receptionist in our lodge to help us when needed. Had to drive all the way back to main cabin multiple times no cool

Stay away from Split Rock Resort My family and I had booked two rooms at Split Rock Resort for the PA Wine Festival two day package June 22 & 23rd, 2024 that included t-shirts and entrance to the Wine Festival. As background we had attended the festival years ago and it was quite nice. Not this time......... WINE FESTIVAL (Saturday June 22nd) *it took over an hour to gain entrance to the festival. There were hundreds of people standing in 90+ degree heat. Making people stand in line WHO PAID FOR THE PACKAGE DEAL was ridiculous. The people who are staying on property should have been given their entrance bracelets, t-shirts and wine glasses WHEN THEY CHECKED IN! Instead you had hundreds of people waiting in line in the heat. Either that or they should have let everyone in early, and just not served wine until the start at noon. We wasted an entire hour of the festival waiting in line. (the festival is only from noon until 5:00 so we wasted one fifth of the festival time standing in line!) *there was ONE security guard checking I.D.s for hundreds of people. *there were TWO people checking ticket reservations and putting on bracelets for hundreds of people. *the wine samples were only TABLESPOON sized. *there were only a handful of picnic tables so there was no place to sit and eat food. *no shade. The festival was in a parking lot. *Ice stopped being delivered to the vendors so there were no cold drinks of any kind after 2:00 pm on a day where the temperatures were over 90 degrees. *No Igloo water coolers to rinse your glass or get some water. The vendors used a tiny water bottle and poured maybe an ounce of water into your glass to rinse out the wine. There was no place to dump the left over wine/water. *at about 3:00 pm 10% of the vendors had already LEFT! *The entire festival was poorly organized, and ridiculously understaffed. *we were given the run around (read lied to) when we asked for our t-shirts. We were told to "go to the festival entrance" "pick them up at the Lodge" "your shirts will be delivered to your room" "come back later" and on and on and on. (lies upon lies upon lies). Finally I said I would not go running around any more, and waited in the hotel lobby for someone to go get the shirts who finally did. HOTEL *Check in was a joke and there were lines all the time. *Multiple guests were complaining. One guest said "ITS ALL LIES. EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU IS A LIE." (I should have listened) *there was NO AIR CONDITIONING IN THE TOWN CENTER HOTEL LOBBY AND HALLWAYS. It was 90+ degrees out and just as hot inside. *We checked in at the Town Center and got only one room key. When we went back to get the other room key later, we again had to stand in line. We weren't told that our room was in another building a mile away at the LODGE so we had to pack our luggage back into the car to drive to the other location. It would have been nice if someone told us this when we got the first room key! *There was NO AIR CONDITIONING IN THE LODGE LOBBY AND HALLWAYS either! *Room 218 had no air conditioning! and it wasn't the King that I had booked! When we asked for another room we were told there were no rooms available anywhere on the property. *We ended up all sleeping in one room, and thankfully Robert and Luis brought us roll away beds. (Room 206 did have air conditioning) *Everywhere we went there were people complaining. I don't think I saw one person who didn't have a complaint. People would randomly share their terrible experiences and everyone was unhappy. *The property is severely neglected, and showed it age and damage such as holes in the roof of outbuildings by the Sand Bar. It looks like they place hasn't been maintained in 30 years: Siding falling off, neglected areas, garbage visible, uneven walk ways, weeds everywhere etc. I WOULD NOT STAY AT SPLIT ROCK FOR ANY REASON EVER AGAIN. *The only good thing were Robert and Luis. Robert was killing himself trying to make things right, but he can't be everywhere all the time. (Believe me he tried!) We saw him working at the Wine Festival, at the front desk of the Lodge, out at the Sand Bar, bringing us the roll away bed etc. He even told us he painted the picnic tables at the Sand Bar HIMSELF! That man deserves a RAISE! He was very kind and helpful but the magnitude of the problems are bigger than a single man can fix. THANK YOU ROBERT!! HANG IN THERE!!!
