San Francisco’s Mission District: Colorful Murals, Taquerias, and Stylish Restaurants

To get a real sense of the Mission District’s ethnic diversity, sample the restaurants lining Mission and Valencia Streets. Eateries run the gamut from tiny Mexican stands and Middle Eastern cafés to trendy gastropubs. The neighborhood was named for the Mission Dolores, a religious settlement founded in the 18th century. The site’s tiny Mission San Francisco de Asís is considered the city’s oldest standing structure. Inside the whitewashed adobe chapel, you’ll find an intricately detailed altar and a ceiling covered in Native American patterns.

While in the Mission District, be sure to keep an eye out for murals—local artists splash portraits, slogans, and memorials across walls, fences, garage doors, and other outdoor surfaces. Balmy Alley, located near 24th and Harrison, probably has the city’s highest concentration of these colorful compositions.

Iconic Golden Gate Park Adjacent Hotel We had a terrific stay at the beautiful Stanyan Park Hotel. The beds were comfy. Everything was spotless. It is a historical gem located right on the edge of Golden Gate Park. In fact our pretty corner room looked out over the park. It was heavenly. The breakfast was yummy and thoughtful. Including eggs and sausage, juice, coffee, cereals, bagels, juices, and teas. Plus more. The staff was super nice. I recommend

Suite stay...recommended for families We visited as a family of 5 from Ohio. I booked a suite which was a delight that had two bedrooms, living room and a kitchen. We got early check in too! The hotel is an older early 1900's hotel but has modern workings (LED TV, security key card door locks) but original decor. What was so cool was the details of life from 120's years ago...the hotel is filled with vintage photos in the public areas. The suite was clean, fresh linens daily, and hot showers. The free cafe breakfast is simple but ok with grab and go items. The hotel is in a very unique location at Golden Gate Park and walkable to neighborhood streets (Haight / Irving / Geary) and transportation just two blocks to downtown. Recommended to my friends too, who will come in March too.

stay away No hotel to make business with. I book regularly a room for a collaborator, the location is ideal. Due to a shifted meeting, I had to cancel a stay, which I did per mail 4 days before. I never got a confirmation and when I called, they claimed they would not read their mails and will not refund any money. I wrote to the manager but never got an answer. They don't care about their customers.
