New Hampshire's Lakes Region: Outdoor Activities amid the White Mountains

Nestled between Concord and Manchester to the south and the White Mountain National Forest to the north, New Hampshire’s Lakes Region is a year-round haven for outdoor enthusiasts. This scenic area is home to the sparkling waters of Lake Winnisquam, Squam Lake, Newfound Lake, and the expansive Lake Winnipesaukee. Throughout the seasons, the region teems with activity, attracting hikers, skiers, and an array of wildlife, including foxes, moose, and deer.

During the warmer months, visitors can enjoy world-class fishing, with common catches like perch, rainbow trout, and the prized walleye. Hiking trails wind through lush forests, while golf courses offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. As winter blankets the region in snow, adventure seekers can hit the slopes at Gunstock Mountain, Loon Mountain, and other nearby resorts, offering exceptional skiing, snowboarding, and sledding opportunities. No matter the season, the Lakes Region promises breathtaking scenery and endless outdoor adventure.

Terrible Experience! Double check which part of this “resort” your staying at… Terrible experience. Booked for two nights, but left after one. Paid for a “suite” that was outdated and gross. Paint chipping from the ceiling, dingy furniture, and the only thing looking semi clean were the sheets. We were clearly in the old building that hasn’t been updated in a very long time. Never before had we left a hotel early, but there was no way we were staying here a second night. Staff was not helpful and OF COURSE offered no type of credit or even partial refund because we left at 12 and not 10am.

Winter time Family Fun! Steele Hill was a great family friendly place to go with my kids and husband for a weekend get away this winter! So many things to do indoor pools, sauna and hot tubs! Sledding and fire with smores and hot chocolate. There’s even a gym off of the pool that I went to while my family was at the pool. We stayed in the West Suites which was attached to the pool. So you don’t have to wear jackets and boots! We had a great time!! I hope we can go again in the summer time!
