Hotel at a Glance: Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club
Soon after it opened on the shores of Reed’s Bay, Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in 1914 quickly became the preferred destination for celebrities traveling to the Jersey Shore. In 1967, President Dwight D. Eisenhower teed off on the world-class golf course, The Rolling Stones spent 10 days here during their ’89 Steel Wheels tour, Bob Dylan checked in under the name “Justin Case,” and Grace Kelly, later known as Princess Grace of Monaco, celebrated her sixteenth birthday in the Oval Room. The hotel has added several modern amenities since then, including a spa and an art gallery. But you’ll still find the customer service and stately decor that made Stockton Seaview Hotel so special nearly 100 years ago.
- Tee off: The club’s two 18-hole golf courses have hosted legends including Ben Hogan and Bing Crosby. Sam Snead captured his first major here during the 1942 PGA Championship with a spectacular 60-foot chip.
- Hot tip: The Friday-night seafood buffet includes a “seafood tower” of Delaware Bay clams, poached white shrimp, cape may salties, and blue swimmer crab claws
- Pamper yourself: The hotel’s Elizabeth Arden spa offers some indulgent signature services, including an olive oil skin softening scrub and an antioxidant facial charged with multi-vitamins
- Interesting dishes to try: The Seared Jersey Day boat scallops with grilled corn and quinoa salad, and Hammonton honey marinated pork chop in a blueberry Riesling glaze; both are served in the main dining room
- Why visit now: The hotel just installed a new satellite art gallery from the renowned Noyes Museum of Art, which showcases work from regional artists.
- Distance to Atlantic City Boardwalk: 10 miles
- Keep your eyes peeled for: Dolphins, turtles, and ospreys, which you can typically see during a sailing trip along New Jersey’s golden-sand beaches
Galloway, New Jersey: Historic Beach Town 20 Minutes from Atlantic City Boardwalk
Located nine miles north of Atlantic City, Galloway is a charming seaside town filled with saltwater marshes and preservation areas. It’s one of many historic towns that make up the Jersey Shore, a flashy summer resort known for its beaches and bustling boardwalk. During warmer months, sailboat charters and catamaran tours take off from the coast. Many locals, however, prefer to take quieter canoe trips in one of the nearby bays. A couple miles inland, there are world-class golf courses, including Galloway National Golf Club, which was named the sixth-best golf venue in New Jersey by Golf Digest in 2013. No trip to the Atlantic City area is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey's eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it's family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.
