Idyllwild-Pine Cove, California: Small Art Town in the San Jacinto Mountains

Idyllwild may seem like a tiny town tucked away in the San Jacinto Mountains, but it’s no forgotten village: it earned a spot in the book 100 Best Small Art Towns in America and was voted LA’s Best Mountain Getaway by LA Weekly in 2013. Everywhere you turn, you’ll find yourself among theaters, art galleries, and eclectic shops, and you’ll walk past colorful buildings and public art. The annual Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema has been compared to a mini Sundance, and there’s even a boarding school for budding young artists at the Idyllwild Arts Foundation.

But Mother Nature is this town’s greatest artist, and people come year-round to admire her work. Go hiking in the San Bernardino National Forest, cast a line into Lake Hemet, or bike through meadows full of wildflowers. For a little more adventure, try rock climbing at Tahquitz Peak. Idyllwild is well situated for day trips as well—it’s within a two-hour drive of Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park.

Nice Hotel walking distance to the town. We stayed at the Strawberry Inn for one night. The Inn recently changed ownership and is not a bed and breakfast so no breakfast is provided. We had a room that was recently remodled and it was a nice room. There was a jucuzzi tub, spearate shower, microwave and plenty of room. The only negative is the room needed a refridgerator. There is a shared patio that overlooks the creek in the back of the hotel. There is a path that travels along the creek to the town center. We would stay here again.

Delightful and Charming Inn The Strawberry Creek Inn made our weekend Idyllwild escape delightful and we cannot wait to return! The inn itself is super charming and it begs you to relax and lounge in one of the many rooms. I found myself reading for hours in the quaint reading room. Our breakfast was delicious and the friendly host/inn keeper shared many details of the meal and its ingredients. Speaking of the inn keeper, Nathan was super friendly and knowledgeable. If we had more time we'd love to learn more about the beautiful property and history of the building. See you soon Strawberry Creek Inn!

Relaxing and amazing get away My husband and I loved this place. The food and service was great and the inn was so cute. It was our first time in Idyllwild and the owner gave us such good recommendation on food, hikes, and places to visit during our stay.
