Estes Park, Colorado: Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park

Estes Park is a small town known as the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Downtown along Elkhorn Avenue, the main drag, there are the usual souvenir, taffy, and ice-cream shops—but also local breweries and independent restaurants. The resort town also has a popular outdoor ice rink, open on weekends in the winter.

Each year, more than three million people head into Rocky Mountain National Park to access 300 miles of hiking trails and admire stunning mountain vistas. The park’s most popular hike is the half-mile loop around the flat terrain of Bear Lake, but the crowd thins out somewhat at Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lakes. Weather permitting, visitors take the region’s spectacular scenic drives. Trail Ridge Road bisects the park east to west, bringing travelers up to a maximum elevation of 12,000 feet above the tree line. Another option is the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. It wends past the Continental Divide, offering views of Longs Peak—the park’s highest summit, at 14,259 feet.

A cabin on the side of a mountain! My husband and I had a wonderful stay here! The cabin was spotlessly clean and comfortable with a beautiful view. The king size bed was “just right”. The bathroom was very spacious. The kitchenette was adequately stocked for small meals. Max, the owner, was friendly and helpful. The Wi-Fi service was very spotty but ax said a new tower is being built. We would definitely stay here again!

Hotter than Hades with Poor Ventilation The new owners seem to be making investments in the property, but have a stop work order from the city. Some of the updates are interesting, but who needs a space age toilet with a heater in the summer? The shower bar was incredibly rusty, and several screens are missing from windows and doors, which is a big issue in July. The room - #5 - was incredibly hot and come to discover it's right over their laundry. So they do laundry and create more heat which rises into the room. When I checked out I told the owners it was not a good experience and that they make the room hotter by doing laundry all day. They responded that they don't start laundry until 9am, which isn't true and tried to tell me the room doesn't have any heat! Avoid.

Excellent!!! Streamside was exactly what we were looking for. A 2 bedroom cabin, room to play by and in the stream, hot tub on the deck and wildlife on the grounds. The cabin was very comfortable and clean and Max was so friendly and helpful. We saw more wildlife around the cabins than we did in RMNP! Only regret was 2 nights was not enough. I highly recommend staying here.
