Winthrop, Washington: Old West Town Surrounded by Forests

The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in north-central Washington borders the small town of Winthrop. Set in a scenic valley carved out of the Cascade Range by glaciers, the remote region attracts hikers and mountain bikers in the warm months and cross-country skiers in winter. Spring and summer are ideal for viewing wildlife and boating on one of the many lakes in the Methow Valley.

In the 1970s, Winthrop underwent an overhaul to pay homage to its gold-rush roots. Today, it looks like it might have in the 1880s, with hitching posts, Old West-style storefronts, and wooden-plank sidewalks. To get in the spirit of the era, you can watch cattle drives and medicine shows or wet your whistle at the oldest legal saloon in the state.

My wife and I upgraded to the Mt. Robinson room. It was very clean, comfortable and functional. The views was fantastic and there were many hiking trailheads on the property.

Horrible. While the views are nice of the valley, this lodge is way overrated for what it is. There is no spa to speak of. The restaurant where I ordered a steak dinner was mediocre. My meal was 2 hours late even though my server profusely apologized. All in all, I personally would never come back. I think if you ask around town about this lodge, the locals will give you the truth: stay away, you won't get your money back or your money's worth.

The lodge has gone downhill since 2021 We last visited Sun Mountain Lodge in October 2021. Our experience then was phenomenal with dining, service and hospitality excellent. We found the current lodge experience a definite poor experience. Aside from breakfast we would suggest dining elsewhere, which means a minimum 50 minute drive back and forth to either Twisp or Winthrop. The main dining room is only open from Thursday through Saturday. We had one dinner and one lunch in the bar restaurant. Both were very poor experiences., Th e lack of service staff meant long waits to order and very long waits to get your food and long waits to pay. The food was OK at best. For the meal prices one would expect a much better experience and menu selection. I don't fault the service staff as much as management who appear to be operating with a skeleton staff. Also be aware that you must request daily housekeeping. The front desk are to make you aware of this at check in. Ours did not and we did not read the counter sign referencing housekeeping on request. For the room price we will not return unless they completely improve their service.

Exceptional customer service in a bend.. We needed a roll-over bed to sleep one extra person in a king bedroom. When there was no staff available late night to get the roll-over, Sun Mountain Lodge went above and beyond to accommodate an empty adjacent room. Do note that this is not a busy day, but still, this was great customer service. This was our second visit in 2 years, and we will be returning soon... The breakfast service was great; not over priced given it is a tourist spot, and brunch items were savory (not bland at all). The tranquility of the hot tub and swimming pool area between Gardner and Robinson needs to be experienced... And, I got amazing astrography pics...
