Just as the AAA Four Diamond Sun Mountain Lodge is nestled between mountains, it is also firmly placed somewhere between refined elegance and rustic charm. Exposed beams, bent-willow furniture, and Northwest-inspired artwork give it the feel of a tucked away cabin, while its relaxing spa and comfy amenities bring in modern treats. The result is a lodge that strikes a healthy balance between a nature escape and a luxury getaway.
- Enjoy the views: Gardner rooms lookout at Mount Gardner and Lodge rooms offer mountain or valley vistas. Some of the rooms have private patios, balconies, and in-room fireplaces.
- Stretch your legs: Hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, and horseback riding trails start on the property and stretch throughout 3,000 acres of the scenic Methow Valley.
- Giddyup, cowboy: Visitors can visit the days of the Wild West by heading into downtown Winthrop and catching a rodeo or visiting the Shafer Museum.
- At day’s end, be sure to take a trip to the lodge’s spa for a massage or renewing body scrub.
Winthrop, Washington: Old West Town Surrounded by Forests
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in north-central Washington borders the small town of Winthrop. Set in a scenic valley carved out of the Cascade Range by glaciers, the remote region attracts hikers and mountain bikers in the warm months and cross-country skiers in winter. Spring and summer are ideal for viewing wildlife and boating on one of the many lakes in the Methow Valley.
In the 1970s, Winthrop underwent an overhaul to pay homage to its gold-rush roots. Today, it looks like it might have in the 1880s, with hitching posts, Old West-style storefronts, and wooden-plank sidewalks. To get in the spirit of the era, you can watch cattle drives and medicine shows or wet your whistle at the oldest legal saloon in the state.
