Sarasota, Florida: Pristine Gulf Coast Beaches and Colorful Artist Colonies

Bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on Florida’s western coast, Sarasota offers easy access to more than 40 miles of pristine beachfront. One of the most popular stretches of sand is Siesta Beach on the barrier island of Siesta Key, known for its exceptionally white and powdery shore made almost entirely of quartz and confectioners’ sugar.

Artists and entertainers have flocked to Sarasota since the 1920s, when John Ringling made the sleepy resort town the winter headquarters of his traveling circus. See the impresario’s extensive personal collection of old masters at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. To watch modern-day painters and sculptors at work, visit the Towles Court artist colony.

Wildcats can be bothersome when campers have dogs. We have stayed at other Sun Outdoor RV Resorts, we were thinking it was going to be similar. This was not…. They have wildcats walking all over picnic tables and grounds. If you have dogs, they will be going wild with the scent. You are told not to feed the wildcat however we did see residence feeding them. The park is under some renovations, and probably will turn out to be a very nice place IF you are traveling without dogs.

Rude and unprofessional We booked an RV at this park through Air BnB. Completely legitimate, or so we thought. We were in town for my father’s funeral and needed a place for our family to stay. 1/2 way through our stay they learned that we booked through AirBnB and had us evicted from our rental. Apparently their rules are that owners cannot privately lease out their units. That may be but we were treated like criminals and trespassers and forced to leave 3 days early. The owner of the unit was unaware of the no leasing policy but Sun Outdoors should not have taken that out on us. They should have let us finish our stay and then take it up with the owner. We own our own RV and we will NEVER go back here when we visit my Mom in Florida. They were rude, unprofessional, overreactive and made an already sad time, for me and my family, even worse. AirBnB did make good on a partial refund but the experience was extremely traumatic and totally unnecessary. These people have no scruples and we would not recommend doing business with them. EVER

Might as well be a 55+ community Booked a week here for our family spring break trip. Kids ages 6-12. Upon first impression, everything is very clean and nice. Convenience of poolside grill/bar is great and lots of “activities” on the calendar. We tried to participate in a few of these activities- one in particular was the Karaoke with DJ Donny. We arrived before the event and my two daughters put their karaoke song request in. They were 8th in line. As the evening progressed and after about 10 singers, we inquired about my daughter’s spot in line only to find that DJ Donny gives preference to the older people in attendance and put my girls name at the bottom of the ever growing list of karaoke singers. Upon confrontation by my husband he began swearing and asked the bartender to kick us out. Very rude. All the “activities” and dominated by the older patrons and don’t look kindly on families or kids participating. Very few kids there anyway. Another bummer was the water slide hours are only 3pm-5pm on weekdays and 1-5pm on weekends, so a little misleading in their marketing of the pool/slide.
