Negril, Jamaica: Laid-Back Beach Town with Picturesque Sunsets, Snorkeling, and Cliff Diving

Located on Jamaica’s western coast, Negril is known for its white-sand beaches, dramatic rugged cliffs, and coral reefs lying just offshore in the Caribbean. Its underwater beauty makes the town a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling at Negril Marine Park, and anglers have found the sea filled with blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The city has a front-row seat to some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, and people often climb to the top of waterfront cliffs just to watch. At Rick’s Cafe, which is listed in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die, groups congregate every night to watch the sun dip below the horizon; some brave adventurers even leap off the 35-foot cliffs into the water.

Often called "the capital of casual," Negril is best defined by its laid-back vibe, from the slow and steady rhythm of the indigenous reggae music to its unofficial uniform—swimsuits and flip-flops. Running along the town is Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of powdery, white-sand coastline that earned a spot on Frommer’s Best Beaches in the Caribbean list. The town center comprises a shopping mall and a craft market where visitors can pick up locally produced goods.

What a wonderful stay at SATP! I just returned from a week at Sunset at the Palms (SATP). I travel with a friend and we've been to Cuba and Mexico. We are both retired and this place was a perfect fit. We will return! Check-in/Check-out Fast and friendly. Warm welcome and a heartfelt farewell. The perfect bookends to a wonderful vacation. Food The food was outstanding, and I appreciated the extended hours of the buffet (which was excellent). Fresh fruit (mangoes were in season!), great bread and rolls, pasta, veggies, and lovely desserts - the rum balls, OMG. We knew there would be no lobster as they don't harvest during mating season - and my friend, who loves lobster, told me that she forgot about it because there were so many other meat and fish options. The chef's showcase was amazing - not just the food, but the service and atmosphere. You can see and taste the pride they take in every dish. Lunch on the beach was probably my favourite - the jerk chicken, rice & peas, and my favourite - the nachos! I packed a small take-out container to put in my fridge so I could enjoy jerk chicken as a midnight snack in my room. Drink Oh, so good! Loved the coffee bar, especially the frozen Jiggy Coffee. Blue Mountain Coffee is fabulous on its own, but mix it with rum cream? OMG. Fantastic rum (ask for the J Wray white overproof...LOL). Lots of cocktail and frozen options at the beach and the pool bar. We didn't spend time in the piano bar, probably because we liked the smoking area access behind the pool in the evenings. Room The standard room was lovely. Comfortable king-sized bed, fresh linens, tons of pillows! Well-stocked fridge with water, Red Stripe beer, and Coke. Really nice bathroom with a huge shower and dispensers of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. I liked the closet as it had lots of hangers. The TV stand included drawers. Pool We loved the pool, day and night. The bar was great and there is a smoking section just behind where we met lots of other guests. We did the beach in the morning and cooled off in the pool in the afternoons. We were always able to find shade and loungers. No need to towel game here, at least not at this time of year/capacity - and I've never written that about any other place. Beach Short stroll to the beach. Yes, you do cross a busy road, but the crossing guards get you through safely. Beautiful sand, waters were gentle while we were there, and the extra floaties were a nice touch (they'll inflate yours if you bring your own). Loved the food and drink. Sunset was stunning. Again, a nice smoking section where you can meet people. The staff on the beach were a lot of fun. No towel gaming necessary. Staff will set you up with lounges, towels, and little tables. If, like me, you burn easily, they'll be happy to put you somewhere with plenty of shade. Staff One thing that stood out to me was how kind the staff were to each other - as a guest, you can feel that good atmosphere. They are justifiably proud of their resort and it shows in all the little details. When we went to the chef showcase, I loved how the whole team was out front at various times, explaining their dishes, and giving credit to every member. Gift Shop Best gift shop ever. Seriously, leave some room in your suitcase, you're going to need it. I am a full-figured woman and was actually able to find dresses that fit me. The prices are far better than what you'll find at the airport gift shops. The staff who run the gift shop are friendly, funny, and again, proud of what they are delivering to their guests. They know their products and their customers. We stopped in every single day - even just to say hi. Yep, the gift stop is a stand-out. What made this resort a good fit? Okay, we're middle-aged. We like to have a few drinks, socialize, go to sleep, then repeat. I did not miss having a disco or thumping bass. That's just not me anymore. If those things are important to you, you'll be happier somewhere else. We loved every staff member we encountered. Unfailingly friendly, they are great ambassadors for their resort and their country. This is a small resort in terms of the number of guests, so you tend to run into people multiple times. I loved that about this resort. However, if you wish to do your own thing, that's doable. There's plenty of space and amenities for everyone. I'd like to thank everyone at SATP for a wonderful week. I hope to return next year!

Best Relaxing trip !! LONG REVIEW ahead Our vacation to Sunset at the palms was nothing short of fabulous. We were there for 9 days March 27-April 5th and were sad to go. The resort was everything we were looking for and also what we didn’t even know we needed. Rooms: 1. The “treehouse” rooms are unique and great. The rain shower is perfect after a day in the sun. 2. The deck with day bed is perfect for an afternoon rest with a cocktail. 3. Rooms are great as you are not attached to the other treehouse, you only share a walk up stairway. The walk to the room is beautiful with so much greenery, plants, birds. Entertainment; We knew going into this resort it was going to be more on the quieter side ( no disco). However they did have various live music through out the week, which was great. Food 10/10 - Don’t be thrown off by lack of “a la cart” restaurants, the regular dinning area has various a la cart nights with menu’s that can suit anyone and the food is delicious. The lotus leaf restaurant was so good!! We went back twice. Staff: The staff is incredible, very friendly, knowledgable and fun! While we didn’t get all the names, Christine, Ashley and Nadine were just a few we chatted with most of the week and superior service by all. Bars; We were there on an odd week when it rained daily in the afternoon - we decided that in the long run this worked out best for us, didn’t get crispy fried in the sun and got some great use of our beautiful room with an afternoon nap :) However, there is a lounge bar with couches and tables and they have LOTS of board games. We saw lots of people on the rainy afternoons and evenings in the lounge having fun with the games while live music played and the bar right were. Sports Bar; covered area by the pool, TV for sports. Lots of fun drinks and access to food. Pool; While we didn’t spend too much time there ( Ocean people) its very beautiful- surrounded by beautiful greenery and flowers, pool was very clean, maintained well. Pool bar right there. Lots of pool chairs and never had a problem getting a chair when we did go there. Ocean/Beach Is across the road- however very short walk and they have very friendly staff that stop traffic for you. The Beach is breath taking. The staff rakes it daily and is impeccably clean. They have covered cabana/tree’s should you want shade or tons of open sunny beach should you wish ti lay in the sun. We never had a hard time getting a chair and they staff set up the chair, cleaned it off and provided a side table daily for us. We got to the beach daily between 8:30am-9:30am never had a problem finding a chair. That being said - we NEVER saw any time of day people not being able to get one. The water itself is pristine, warm, clear. Beach also has its own floaties for resort members to use - so no need to bring your own. Beach bar -open early and as of lunch, they have wait staff that bring you a flag and you can just put the flag up and they serve you at your beach chair . We spent as much time as possible at the ocean. Right next to the resort is a public beach bar ($) if your there before March 31, they have live lobster you can pick you own and they cook on site. Bar is great, its all open, beers cold and fun atmosphere. There is a LOT of beach to walk should you wish. Left is more resorts you can just walk the beach and to the right is a lot of Jamaican vendors should you wish for some souvenirs. Locals walk the beach to sell their wares, but all are very friendly and certainty accept a no thank you graciously Spa: ($) I used the spa and had a massage with Petulia on the second last day of the trip. Probably best I had it late in the trip because other wise I would have been there daily, LOL. It was one of the best massages I have ever had. So very relaxing, the perfect pressure and having it outside in a screened in gazebo was so very freeing. I highly recommend it. Concierge; I booked spa through the concierge as well as dinners and any other requests we had. They were amazing and were able to provide answers very quickly. This resort has separate coloured wrist bands for repeat customers - I really like this idea and were able to see just how many people have come back to this unique and wonderful resort. We didn’t want to leave and said before we left that we will be returning. I honestly don’t have anything negative to say about the resort or trip. It was 9 days in paradise.

Excellent. 10 out of 10. After much research and wanting to steer clear of the larger AI experience, we selected SATP to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We also traveled with 3 other couples. There’s so many things to love about this resort. I’ll highlight a few below. The lush, green grounds are truly something. One of my favorite experiences was relaxing on the treehouse balcony, listening to the birds and seeing the gorgeous palms and plants all around. The walk to the restaurants and around the resort allows up to admire more of the well-planned landscape. It’s so very beautiful. The staff here is second to none. Although I don’t recall the names of everyone encountered, I felt Britney, Kash, Odine and Lynette stood out. While walking around we also lucked out and ran into Lynwood who gave us insight as to his landscape plan and highlighted a few of his favorite plants. The staff is friendly, hard working, and will strive to enhance your experience. The food is very good. If you’re expecting a large, sprawling Buffett found at mega AI’s you’ll be disappointed. Instead, at SATP, you’ll find fresh food, some with local flair and cooked to order choices as well. The Chefs Showcase was really nice. Overall, I loved everything about our stay here. Our group of 8 all said they’d return. It’s truly a special experience. I cannot wait to see you again, Sunset at the Palms.
