San Luis Obispo, California: Historic City Close to Hiking and the Pacific Coast

Founded in 1772 as a mission community, San Luis Obispo is one of the oldest towns in California. Nicknamed “SLO,” its centerpiece is Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which was the original mission of the city. The mission has been completely restored since, and it now houses a museum. Nearby, you can wander through posh boutique shops and dine at upscale restaurants. One of the town’s quirkiest—and grossest—attractions is Bubble Gum Alley, where locals and visitors have been sticking their chewed gum since about 1960. Over the years, the ritual has created a mosaic-like public artwork that’s at once beautiful and grotesque.

San Luis Obispo is almost perpetually sunny, with more than 300 rain-free days every year. The city is bisected by a string of hills known as the Nine Sisters, and six of these are open for climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. With the Pacific coastline and beaches 10 miles away, many visitors flock to the area to go windsurfing, kayaking, surfing, and kiteboarding. Also nearby is the resort town of Avila Beach, famous for its hot mineral springs.

My husband and I went for our 20th Anniversary, I had already planed it months in advance before this whole quarantine happened. The resort reassured me of all the safety protocol that was in place and so I felt safe following through with the plans. I’m so happy we did, every one was so nice:) , and it’s so beautiful everywhere you look! 💗

True spa in splendid surroundings I had visited 13 years ago, and wished to try another visit. We spent 2 nights. The rooms have been renovated and look wonderful. The jacuzzi on the porch of the room works just great and was easy to manage. Very service minded staff who reach out to heklp and serve. Beautiful gardens and surroundings. The walk to the view on the hill is definitely demanding, but great views. We also walked to the beach which is a very pleasant 2.5 mile stroll. We tried pizza in the secret garden. Had dinner once in the restaurant which was good. All in all - a true spa

Worst 24hr Customer Service We came to stay overnight for the hot springs when prices were higher due to Memorial Day weekend. Our hot spring water tap stopped working around 10pm, so we called room service. They sent someone who couldn’t fix it and said we had to wait until whenever maintenance came in the morning/afternoon. Our checkout was at 11am. No offers to change our room etc. So… we paid a lot for a regular room. What is the point of having 24hr customer service if they can’t troubleshoot problems? This isn’t the first time things broke down. Twice before there was no central heating or cooling when we came; front desk answered the call, but nothing was fixed. As a regular to this place, I must say their service is frustratingly useless. We always came for the hot springs; this may be the last straw.

Disappointing King Hot Tub Room Nice property, but disappointed with Rise & Shine King package. Aged hot tub without sulfur neutralizing oils that were extra charge, small bathroom with rusted shower curtain and old shower fixture. Very steep incline to room with limited parking. Profit-focused organization with good marketing and onsite customer interaction service.
