Green Mountains, Vermont: Historical Towns Surrounded by Wilderness

Named for the layers of stately evergreens that carpet their slopes, the Green Mountains are a branch of the ancient Appalachians that stretches north to south through the center of Vermont. It’s a relatively even swath of rolling forests capped by a few summits that rise above the tree line, including Mount Mansfield, which tops off at 4,393 feet. The landscape is home to other rugged scenery, including alpine lakes, and more than 900 miles of mixed-use trails for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing.

The mountains are punctuated by quaint Vermont villages where white church steeples border organic farms and creameries. At the midsection of Green Mountain National Forest is the city of Rutland, which plays host to summer outdoor concerts and the Vermont State Fair. About 70 miles north is Vermont’s largest city, Burlington, which is known for its breweries and boutiques.

Depressing This place is musty and in need of a big update. The beds are not comfortable. The highlight is that the front desk staff is friendly, but the rooms are depressing. It is not walkable to anything except the onsite bar/restaurant, which is also rather glum. I would not stay here again.

Don’t believe the website. It’s that bad Just terrible. Only bright spot was pleasant check in staff. Empty cauldron planters should have been my first clue that the owners have stopped trying. Peeling wallpaper in the bathroom is held in place with yellowing cellophane tape, tiles are broken, the shower grouting is so dirty we skipped showering. Driveway is full of potholes. Another friend found her room so bad she checked out and stayed in the Williams dorms for the remainder of our class reunion. And the colony of moths that descended at night! We paid $400 a night for rooms at peak time ( college reunion). I asked for a partial refund based on the misrepresentations made on the inn website about the quality of accommodation. I’ve heard nothing. I will continue to pursue this but in the mean time, save yourselves! Run, don’t walk away.

Look elsewhere really tired and threadbare. The TV looks like it’s is 10 years old with a 18” screen. The flowers were still in bloom because they looked artificial. For what we got the $250 rate was a joke. The only positive thing is that it was only for one night.
