Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Loved having a full kitchen to prepare a few meals. Liked the bedroom, rather than a hotel room with only beds. Nice large bathroom with tub and separate shower.

Great stay! I must admit upon arrival to the unit we found an unidentifiable stain on the love seat and one on the sheets. The carpet in the bedroom was also a bit dirty. We made a call and everything was promptly taken care of. We were impressed with the response. Aside from this, the place was extremely comfortable. We loved having a kitchen being we decided to not do anything but sleep and hang around the resort for a few days after attending parties. The huge soaking tub is a plus. It was sooo relaxing. Also, we were thrilled for me to have my own private area with a vanity and sink. Having the two sink areas really made getting ready for my husband and me a snap. We also had a view of the strip. Though we had a rental car, having the Silverton casino and restaurants right next door was convenient. We especially loved the Bass Pro Shop and watching the mermaids in the huge tank at the Silverton. What we found to be the absolute best out of our stay is the wonderful, attentive staff at the Berkley. Everyone who worked there from the front desk to the security was absolutely wonderful. We will definitely be returning.

Simple, no frills resort The units are clean, spacious and the washer/dryer is a plus. Staff super friendly. Probably not the best for little kids as there's not much to do. Take advantage of the resort right across the street. Great food just wished we had access to their pool.

Hotel from hell. There were 3 of us ladies who stayed at the Berkeley for 10 nights. Everything was good until 2 days before we were due to leave. Our room was accessed by someone unknown to us while we were downstairs and stole all our money. We went straight down to reception once we realised what had happened to report it. We also phoned the police. Staff were very nice and sympathetic but we knew that once we returned to the UK that would be the end of it. I have emailed them on numerous occasions, but nobody wants to help. My advice to anyone staying at the Berkeley is watch your bag/purse like a hawk. DO NOT TRUST THE STAFF. We also know that this isn’t the only time something has gone missing. While we there, there was another issue with one of the owners. Would I go back there - not a chance.
