Narragansett, Rhode Island: Picturesque Beaches in 19th-Century Resort Town

Narragansett’s rock-strewn beaches along the Atlantic Ocean made it a popular resort town in the late 19th century, when affluent vacationers built Gothic and Victorian manors on the waterfront. The sea remains Narragansett’s main draw to this day, especially in summer. The town is home to some of the most sought-after coastline in the state, where you can sunbathe and hunt for seashells. For a more active pursuit, take the year-round ferry to Block Island to hike up seaside bluffs that are up to 250 feet high.

Fall and winter are the best times to visit Narragansett if you want to avoid crowds. Don’t let cooler temperatures keep you cooped up—there’s excellent bass fishing in Narragansett’s salt ponds in autumn and you can surf and stroll the main beach in the winter. Head to the Narragansett Pier Marketplace to browse local shops and cafés. From here you can walk to the waterfront and take a tour of the 19th-century Towers. The granite structure, which used to be attached to the town’s most illustrious resort and casino, survived a devastating fire in 1900.

This property is so cozy and comfortable and has beachy elegance. The staff is pleasant; they really made us feel pampered. I love the colors throughout the property. Nostalgic. The breakfast is fantastic! The heated outdoor pool is such a treat in the winter. We have visited several times for a getaway and will return.

5 star no more It took me a bit to post this review as we are hesitant to criticize 5 star no longer I and my wife have had the pleasure of staying at the break in Narragansett, RI a few times in various times of the season. We always find top notch staff. The staff is this property highest asset. The rooms are sensational. Ocean view, sunset view it does not matter. The location…Narragansett, RI. Beaches, food, beaches, sun, long walks on the beach and the food. Aunt Carries, the break chair 5, iggys and George’s are a few of the local fare in this area. The pool. The break pool is the finest in this area. Heated year round. Always clean. And there is a sauna. Yes a cute but wonderful sauna. Staff that check one in and out, make suggestions where to eat, put out the chocolate chip cookies, take care of the pool( he’s the best). So many aspects that make the break a past 5 star. But something has changed. It is the complimentary breakfast. A wonderful breakfast with option for all has now been changed to an almost inedible, tasteless cheap breakfast. Next will be raspberry danish and bagels from local supermarket . I understand complimentary is “ free” but it’s part of the room bill. The new breakfast is confusing, tasteless and not satisfying offering. I spoke with other returning guests and they claimed their same dismay. To me this is a cost cutting reaction. Replace a solid and limited menu with tapas of little taste and appeal. I rather have 10% taken off room rate than eat the tasteless tapas. I am sure management will respond that guests enjoys the assortment of offering the tapas provide. My wife and I are truly disappointed in this change. The former complimentary breakfast was Buffett and we never abused this delightful offering of traditional breakfast food which tried to meet the needs of all guest. I can imagine this change came down to costs. I cannot believe it was anything else but this. The break continues to be a wonderful place to stay but no longer the 5 star it has always been

The Break in Narragansett is tucked away on Ocean Road...and worth uncovering! Visited The Break on Saturday, 5/18 with friends for cocktails and music. The acoustic guitar in the lounge area was lovely, played all the classics! Old Fashions by the fire were on another level! Wow! Service and overall ambiance a 12! Shout out to Jake at the bar...Go Clemson Tigers!
