Chicago's Loop: Historic Commercial Center with World-Class Museums and Parks

Named after the shape formed by the elevated train tracks that form its perimeter, The Loop is Chicago's downtown and the country’s second-largest business district. Skyscrapers such as the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the art-deco Chicago Board of Trade Building loom large here. They overlook waterfront parks, a glitzy theater district, and some of the world’s finest art collections.

The Art Institute of Chicago's gargantuan collection covers everything from marble busts to Grant Wood's American Gothic. Just north of the Art Institute, Millennium Park is known for both the Frank Gehry–designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion and for the sculpture Cloud Gate, known to Chicagoans as “The Bean” for its legume-like shape. Nearby Grant Park is dotted with several impressive attractions, including Buckingham Fountain, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. The city's public transportation system is among the country's best. Check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for helpful tips on navigating the city like a local.

Wonderful Stay, great check in front desk agent, awful check out front desk agent We stayed here 7/20/2024, a little confusing getting in from the parking garage but one we made, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is only one floor of the building and that is the 40th floor. Love the decor in the hallways and the room, fantastic views, quite, clean and the front desk agent Ron was amazing! We would definitely stay there again. The only issue was the female front desk agent working during checkout. She was on her computer and took over a minute to acknowledge us, we asked her about the parking garage discount Ron told us about and then she bashed Ron and told us he was wrong and went on about him rudely. After a few minutes of this she mentioned validation. Well, the validation gives you a discount, I guess we had to put up with her rudeness because we used the word discount instead of validation. Ron did say validation. All in all a great stay but friendly customer service goes a long way and the morning front desk agent does not understand this.

A strange place to get to We booked this hotel because of the accessibility to parking and most of the other hotels were fully booked. The hotel is based on the 40th floor of the Buckingham financial building. Our room had a magnificent view over the harbour and the city. It was a huge room with all the facilities that we could require. The staff were very helpful and the room was clean. We would stay here again.

Overall, the stay was great! The hotel location is a walkable distance to anywhere you want to be in The Loop. The train station is very proximate to the hotel which provides convenience from and to the airport. The breakfast was simple but the ambience felt nice. Best of all, the staff: Joel, Chris, and Joana were very welcoming. They were very helpful in terms of providing us with what we needed and answering whatever questions we had about the area since it was our first time in Chicago.

Where is this Motel 40? The hotel is a beautiful building with outstanding views of Chicago and the Financial District. The hotel occupies the 40th floor of the building. There is an elevated train a block away. But as others have stated, finding the hotel and the parking is a challenge. I drove all the way around the block, and there are NO CLEARLY VISABLE signs identifying the hotel. The signs are not distinctive or well illuminated especially at night. Parking is below the building, you have to drive up to the closed rollup door, to active the sensor. Once you get your ticket and get inside, again there are NO signs for the hotel, except by a door that looks like a service entrance, that goes into a reserved parking area for tenants, not guests. I parked, took the wrong elevator, to the parking 1st level then and had to drag my three bags up some stairs. I found out that you'd need a special key card to open that service entrance looking door anyway. Then once inside the building lobby, security will advise you to take another elevator to the 39th floor. Then you have to transfer to another elevator to the 40th floor. Three different elevators to get the the hotel reception. There was no valet or luggage carts in the lower building lobby or bellhop. The hotel reception is run-down. The very friendly gentleman checked me in, but wearing a tee shirt. The rooms are very nice, very comfortable beds, although the bathroom storage doesn't have a shelves, but a large area under the sink. The shower is nice and large or can be used as a tub. The breakfast is just breads, cereals, yogurt and some fruit. There's no hard boiled egg or meats. The "high-speed Wi-Fi" isn't so high-speed in the rooms. The staff is friendly, but I'd recommend they have uniforms or a dress code for receptionists. The rooms are non-smoking, but our neighbors were having a wonderful weed party Friday night. It was quite strong stuff and the smell was in our room. The receptionist Ron brought some air freshener spray. I didn't care they using, but the rooms are non-smoking and there is a $250 cleanup fee, which I didn't want to be responsible for. The gym/pool is closed on the weekend, and is only open 6am-6pm. Again, the staff is very friendly and hospitable, the location isn't perfect, as you're close to the Magnificent Mile, but its a far walk or short taxi ride. I have to stress the hotel must get better signage for the hotel AND inside the building to mark how to get to the hotel.
