San Luis Obispo, California: Historic City Close to Hiking and the Pacific Coast

Founded in 1772 as a mission community, San Luis Obispo is one of the oldest towns in California. Nicknamed “SLO,” its centerpiece is Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which was the original mission of the city. The mission has been completely restored since, and it now houses a museum. Nearby, you can wander through posh boutique shops and dine at upscale restaurants. One of the town's quirkiest—and grossest—attractions is Bubble Gum Alley, where locals and visitors have been sticking their chewed gum since about 1960. Over the years, the ritual has created a mosaic-like public artwork that's at once beautiful and grotesque.

San Luis Obispo is almost perpetually sunny, with more than 300 rain-free days every year. The city is bisected by a string of hills known as the Nine Sisters, and six of these are open for climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. With the Pacific coastline and beaches 10 miles away, many visitors flock to the area to go windsurfing, kayaking, surfing, and kiteboarding. Also nearby is the resort town of Avila Beach, famous for its hot mineral springs.

Rude staff.. WIFI was out. Toilet in private bathroom broken. NO help. Wifi was out the entire stay. In the morning, the toilet stopped working. I called the front desk. Was told, no maintenance for two more days. When I asked what to use for a toilet, was told there was one in the lobby. When I left I asked the front desk person for a discount on my stay for no WIFI and no toilet in the morning. She not only said she couldn't help me, she was extremely rude. She gave me the manager's card. I called twice, and emailed once. NO response. This is a nice building but terrible service and rude staff.

Melanie Brock - Rude customer Service. My experience at this hotel was absolutely terrible. Upon arrival, I checked in, got my room key, and headed up to discover that my room was right next to a noisy highway. Since I'm sensitive to noise, I immediately went to the lobby to request a quieter room. While Cole at the front desk seemed willing to help, the supervisor, Melanie Brock , rudely refused and bluntly told me, "That's your room, and that's that." She showed zero concern when I explained my situation. To make matters worse, Melanie Brock handed me her card along with her manager’s contact information as if that would solve anything. When I called her manager, Jeffery Lemus, his response was even more absurd: he explained how the highway was designed to be "quiet." Seriously? Melanie's attitude was beyond rude, and when I asked for a refund since I couldn't stay in the room, they flat-out refused. So, I ended up paying for a room I couldn’t use. It’s clear that some people in this hotel have no business being in the service industry. Avoid this place at all costs!

Yes, on this one. The hotel is very nice dark wood and marble, book case and fireplace in the lobby. The room was really much more than I expected at this price. The only problem was the wifi hook-up. I had to get help several times before we got it working. Otherwise I'll go back for sure. The bakery next door had great pastry. I missed out on the hotel restaurant , open from 4-7 or something. But it looked nice.

It was mostly fine The tub was really nice. The room had a weird odor and was tiny. We had interested experiences with the concierge, one young man was really nice and conversational. The young woman was the absolute opposite! Yikes. Im not sure what I did to make her treat me like this but wow. There was a dance or prom while we were there, which was fine but a heads up would have been great so we could have prepared for the noise. It was a bit disappointing because we’d been recommended by several people to stay here for our anniversary.

Terrible experience on our wedding night We’re so disappointed with our stay at the Carlton. We booked this hotel the night of our wedding to come back to. We got in late around 10:30pm and upon arriving were escorted to our room by the front desk staff (which seemed very nice). He opened the door for us and let us into the room and there was literally someone sleeping in the bed! We were then rushed back downstairs (my wife in her wedding dress and me in my suit) while we waited 30mins for them to find us a room. They eventually found us a suite which was the only room that hadn’t been occupied and it was only available because the tub had overflowed and had dirt and water in it. I’ve tried to reach out to management and no one has gotten back to me! Terrible.
