Downtown Los Angeles: Shopping, Restaurants, and Museums in the Heart of the City

Stroll past the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles and you'll see gleaming modern architecture, neon pagodas, and maybe even a celebrity or two. This 65-block district is incredibly diverse; its easy-to-navigate street grid is divided into multiple quarters, each of which enjoys a distinct cultural identity. In Little Tokyo, you can visit bakeries, shops, and restaurants reflecting the residents' Japanese-American heritage. The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is also here; it houses a vast collection of abstract-expressionist, minimalist, pop, and conceptual work by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Mark Rothko.

The dining and nightlife scene mirrors the area's diversity. You can find nearly any kind of food here, from Peruvian to Vietnamese to Persian. An opulent option is The Edison, an upscale bar built into a century-old power plant. Nearby, you can visit some of the city's most popular entertainment venues, including the L.A. Live, which features 6 performance spaces, 19 restaurants, a cineplex, and the Grammy Museum. The Staples Center is right next door; depending on the season, you can watch the Lakers, Clippers, or Kings in action.

Looks Nice from outside, looks nice in the halls of the Hotel....service, not so great! Stayed two nights at this property in June 2024. Checked in and was given a room right facing the elevators. It is never a good idea to have a room right beside the elevators, especially if you want to sleep at night and not hear noise. Asked for a different room and was given the last room at the end of the hall. There was a martini glass outside of the room on the floor and a pile of soiled towels in the corner of the hallway by the stairwell. There was only a couple of towels in the room. Called room service and asked for towels. I pointed out the pile of towels in the corner to the woman who delivered the towels, who shrugged her shoulders and just left them there. The following morning, the martini glass and the towels were still there. Second night returned to the room and the towels were now gone from the corner but the martini glass was still there. Had something to eat at the place beside the check in desk. Asked if I wanted 'egg' with it. Said, no, that's fine. Got charged $3 extra for egg and could barely notice if it was mixed in the noodles. Asked about the charge and got yelled at by the waitress....'you ordered it, you must now pay for it'. Bill was $15. Gave her a $20. She then moved her hand back and forth a few times with the $5, expecting it as a tip. Finally, just took the $5 and left, not impressed. Went to check out the last morning and low and behold, the martini glass was still outside the room. The woman at check out asked why I never used the dining credit. Nobody told me about a dining credit until now. Had the buffet breakfast and this waitress, middle age woman, unlike the younger one the day before was very nice and polite! One big plus about this place is there is a Costco gas station right outside the place, so if you need to buy gas, that is very convenient! The rooms though are comfortable and the wood floors are nice instead of standard carpeting in most places. Average place, but there are better and far worse choices in California!!

Great place I went to The Commerce Casino to play in a WSOP event. I stayed for two nights and everything was perfect. The staff was great. Everything from the front desk to the valet was on point. The only thing I did not try was the food. Since I was pretty close to downtown, I went there. I will definitely be doing this again.
