San Diego, California: Electric Nightlife and Historical Attractions

San Diego's sunny, comfortably warm weather and 70 miles of coastline have long attracted out-of-towners, but the city's inland scene is no slouch, either. The Gaslamp Quarter is arguably the trendiest listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings occupied by high-end boutiques and gourmet restaurants.

A stroll through iconic Balboa Park takes you past 17 museums, as well as the world-famous San Diego Zoo. There's also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists produce pottery and oil paintings. In Old Town, shops in Mission-style stucco buildings sell colorful woven baskets and maracas. Nearby stands the Whaley House Museum, dubbed one of the Most Terrifying Places in America by the Travel Channel. Ghosts of former residents are said to inhabit the rooms, which are filled with Victorian furniture and eerie dolls.

Great Find Wow, I never knew this place was here! Great place to spend a few days in SD. We were actually there for a soccer tournament and this was a great place to come back to at the end of the day. Easy to throw the kids in the pool and order some cocktails. We stayed in the more modern bay-side rooms with a view of...the bay. Thought the prices were really reasonable and the food, drinks and amenities were all great. Not sure I would stay here for a week but definitely a great place for three days. Dining at hotel was fine and there were restaurants within walkable distance. Beds were comfortable and rooms were very clean and in good condition. Not a five-star hotel but definitely a five star experience. The only downside was that friends had booked rooms for a group of us and even though our names were on the reservations one jerk (older hispanic guy) in the breakfast restaurant kept declining our room charges because the name didn't match the room reservation even though our names were on it and they had our credit card on file. Never had an issue at any of the bars or dining onsite at night. Not enough of an issue to lower the rating. We had a great time.

Not a resort & bad choice for special occasion The lobby was extremely small and very crowded. There was no way for there to be an orderly process. We arrived early were told we should come back later because we would be charged if we checked in early regardless of whether the room was clean or empty. We were directed to a “deli” for lunch which was a bait shop. Very unimpressed. Our room was standard and the balcony was small. We were expecting a much nicer and luxury experience at this “resort.” Resort is a very poor descriptor. Standard hotel is more like it. Our room was not clean when returned after the first night. We asked about this and were told they check for a do not disturb sign in the morning and then just mark it off if there is one. No one told us this in advance. We were adjusting to a time difference and were still out of our room around 10 am. We had to ask for more washcloths and coffee. We went to their very expensive breakfast buffet and had to hunt down a bus boy to help us get a table after waiting 10 minutes while the hostess was on the phone. The waffles and pancakes were cold. All the rest was very good but the selection was limited and nothing was special about it. We had to ask the busboy for bowls as they didn’t have any out despite having cereal and oatmeal. We had to ask our server for condiments and drink refills. We requested to reserve an outside table at Firefly to purchase drinks, appetizers, and desserts in the evening but wanted to bring in pizza to have for dinner due to there not being decent pizza options on site. We were denied this being told it was forbidden to have outside food for “contamination” reasons. This is asinine. The seating is outside with birds, chipmunks, and such carrying contaminants. Every guest brings “contaminants” to the table, and since the staff weren’t touching or throwing away the outside food it is impertinent. The food was not going to be in the kitchen. But even if the staff did touch the food or it went to the kitchen, their denial for this reason implies that the staff cannot maintain decontaminated practices. They are saying the staff are incompetent and that they are not enforcing health code practices. They lost hundreds of dollars (at least $300-400) by refusing this and our business at the restaurant, bar, etc for the remainder of our stay. Plus, that table was noted to be empty the entire evening. When our daughter and her fiancé checked to their room, there was no mention of acknowledgement of their wedding and celebration for which they paid a very large sum of money - very disappointing. They should have been treated like royalty not only for all the money they spent but also because many other guests stayed there because of their wedding. On the day of the wedding, the staff did not know where to tell the bridal party to go and the room the bride and bridesmaids were using was locked at the time we were to arrive. We had to ask a maid to let us in and then we had to seek someone out to get key cards. Two of the breakfasts brought were supposed to be vegetarian and there were no vegetarian plates. After the breakfast was dropped off, no one ever came back to check on us. We had to call to get the plates picked up. No one offered to take an order for drinks or lunch food. Beware that their “beautiful grounds” are public spaces and that parties, those appearing to be unhoused, fishers, bikers, etc from the general public will on property impeding the view and experience of guests. During the wedding rehearsal someone put up a hammock between two trees directly behind the arch. No one attempted to redirect traffic around the wedding while it was in progress for a total of 15 minutes. Someone could have easily been on the opposite sides to manage this. There was one person waving for walkers/bikers to pass more quickly but they were wholly ineffective and a distraction themselves. This was a extremely disappointing experience all around but especially on our family’s most special day. I don’t know if I even captured all the negative experiences. I only gave two stars because the rooms were standard and it wasn’t a slum. I do not recommend this place for a “resort” experience or for celebrating any special occasion.

Great Facility, Awful Service! This is the first time that I stayed at this property, and I would definitely NOT recommend staying here based upon the level of service I received... The first poor instance was upon check-in, when they asked for all of my contact information even though it was already on my reservation (okay, that can happen). But when the woman showed me the map to my room and asked me if I wanted to take a picture so I wouldn't get lost, I simply said, "No, I got it." to which she literally signed as if I was making a mistake (and found it no problem)... Service at the Firefly restaurant for breakfast was another horrible experience, as if I was annoying the host. He simply left me to fend for myself when I wanted to be seated at a table (choose anything open), while others were greeted and escorted to a table where they were they served beverages and such. Even trying to get drinks, I was told to use the drink bar while everyone else was being waited on... The last (although, definitely not the least) of my experiences I will mention is that one of the housekeeping staff asked me to move out of the way when I was standing in a walkway waiting for a friend. I could have sworn I was the guest, but even not, he could have simply gone around versus asking me to get out of the way (not even in a nice or friendly way), just telling me that I needed to move... I have never been to this property before, and I will guarantee that I will never go back again! Of course, I would not recommend this property at all, especially for the price and value you receive, especially when considering other alternative options.
