Providence, Rhode Island: Historical Haven for Foodies and Arts Enthusiasts

Home to Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, and Rhode Island School of Design (or RISD) among other schools, Providence is known as an educational hub. But with an active arts scene, the city has more recently been called “The Creative Capital.” Downtown, you’ll find the arts-and-theater district, where galleries and vibrant storefront displays line the streets. Stagecraft thrives at the Tony Award–winning Trinity Repertory Company, and nearby, the Providence Performing Arts Center hosts touring Broadway shows.

The city's restaurant scene rivals the arts scene in its creativity and local enthusiasm, from the enclave of Italian eateries on Federal Hill to the delis downtown. Local chefs often draw from the regional farms bordering the city for their culinary creations; many gather downtown to shop at the farmers' market.

Average experience The location is very central and convenient, the hotel is clean and nice and the staff is very friendly. However, the wifi didn’t actually work on the 4th floor (all three days) and the pipes in the bathroom were making quit a fair amount of noise

Great stay The Dean Hotel is in a prime location. The overall feel was amazing and we loves the room. Everything we needed was within walking distance and the lounge was amazing especially the lighting and staff! Front desk staff were very professional!

Tiny room, miniscule bathroom and no view for USD250 a night! First the positives: The Dean is in a great downtown location, the staff are friendly and helpful and the place is kept clean. There is a nice bar plus a karaoke bar. The place describes itself a a quirky, boutique hotel which is reasonable: the elevator is very old-fashioned and the last time I saw one like it was in Paris France. You pull open a hinged door and then need a strong arm to head back a sliding iron trellis gate to get into the elevator. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy our stay or find it good value. Our 3rd floor room (311) was tiny and the bathroom barely had space for the very small cramped shower, basin and WC. The ONLY storage provided was a pair of hooks on the wall with a few hangers. NO closets or drawers. No space for large luggage. We had to leave our bigger suitcases in the car and just bring 2 airline cabin size bags into the room. The view from the bedroom windows was onto a facing wall of the same hotel about 6 feet away and you could see into the bedroom opposite! The bathroom window provided a view of a multistorey car park. Car parking nearby is expensive - we paid £75 for two days! If you need ice, you have to ask for it but they do supply it promptly. The only drinking glasses provided are in the bathroom. The only catering (apart from the bars) is a coffee shop which only opens in the morning. They had hot drinks and a few pastries..The nearest place to get an evening meal and a hot breakfast is Murphy's Irish pub (turn right as you leave the hotel and it's on your right) . They also have very good Guinness! If we ever return to Providence RI, we would choose a more modern chain hotel with a reasonable reputation. The rooms would be bigger and you'd have better value.

Ok hotel I decided to stay here because of the history of the building. Rooms were on the smaller side. The shower head was so big that water would go on the floor in the bathroom making it very slippery. The WiFi was terrible. I couldn’t even use it and when I could it took forever. No free water or coffee offered. And in the morning there wasn’t even coffee being offered even if u payed for it. Would rather spend a little extra for a hotel that has more to offer. Very disappointed.

Great location We enjoyed our stay. Hotel is quaint and the vintage charm was great. Speakeasy bar was fun. Location is convenient to restaurants, sites and bars.
