Santa Barbara, California: Beach Town Nicknamed “The American Riviera”

Santa Barbara stands out among the towns along the 400-mile stretch between San Francisco and Los Angeles thanks to its prime location: it’s sandwiched between Pacific beaches to the south and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north. It’s urban, but not overly so—the downtown corridor along State Street is lined with mom-and-pop shops, cafés, bars, art galleries, and movie theaters.

A subtle Mediterranean influence graces most buildings: there are red-tile roofs, stucco façades, and Moorish-style arches. The climate is breezy and warm all year, providing an environment for lush tropical foliage to thrive. It’s easy to see why the city bills itself as “The American Riviera.”

We were celebrating our anniversary and were upgraded to one of the casitas. It was perfect. The bedding was so soft and the fireplace was a nice touch. Breakfast was scrumptious! And freshly baked cookies in the afternoon was a nice surprise. We will certainly be visiting again!

Room is nice. Breakfast was so so. No pool. Dirty vacuum stored in the entry to Catalina and Nicholas was terrible. Dirty vacuum stored in the entry way to Catalina and Nicholas isn’t worth the $400 per might. Designated smoking section below rooms is awful. We had a dab of beans the size that of a quarter on our huevos rancheros. Again, not worth the $400 per night stay. This was our fourth time. We won’t be back. Thank you

Beautiful historic inn, great location Great location, very close to the beach and restaurants. Free bikes available which we gladly took advantage of. Delicious breakfast served each morning. Very reasonably priced for the area. We were very pleased and would stay here again.

Great place. Will definitely return. Friends mentioned this. What a super place! Room small but very nice bathroom. Great decorating. Staff super helpful and personal. Dining room and patio for dining are unique and fun and chefs are superb turning out hot meals every morning that change each day. Very good location. And their restaurant suggestions were tops.
