Mashantucket, Connecticut: Forested Homeland of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe

The scenery in Mashantucket is characterized by dense birch, maple, and sassafras forests that cover a broad swath of southeast Connecticut. This rugged wilderness is home to the Mashantucket Pequot tribe and has been since 1666. Visitors can learn about the reservation’s history through lifelike dioramas, Native American art, and artifacts at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center on the north side of town. Climb to the top of the museum’s 185-foot tower to see panoramic views of the wooded landscape and nearby swamplands.

Mashantucket is also just a 15-minute drive from the coast. Head to Bluff Point State Park to enjoy forested hiking and biking trails that lead to a mile of sandy, secluded beachfront. A few miles north, the town of Mystic preserves the feel of 18th-century coastal New England. You can get a feel for early life here by exploring the old-timey shops at Olde Mistick Village or visiting the Museum of America and the Sea, which chronicles the area’s maritime history.

Gross - Do Not Stay Here I went back and forth on whether to stay here for a dance competition. If you are considering it for any kid activities like that, I recommend NOT staying here. Despite being non-smoking, people smoke weed and cigarettes in their rooms. We had to leave our first room because it was literally filled with smoke from a neighboring room. The rooms themselves are dated and not even close to what you would expect from a 4-star hotel that charges as much as it does. While the hotel is convenient location-wise, the elevators are always packed and slow. The service was poor, and housekeeping doesn't come consistently. It is a total joke that AAA still lists this as 4 Diamonds. The only redeeming part of the stay was the hotel pool, which is open in the summer and is nice.

If you love walking Dated but adequate casino. Limited restaurants and attractions. Most are located in/near Pequot tower. Attached Tanger mall is convenient. Rooms large and clean but many in our group mentioned moisture from air-conditioning. In fact, had to move to another room b/c original had a constant wet spot near air-conditioning unit! Long, lond walk to Pequot tower.
