White Mountains, New Hampshire: Soaring Peaks Surrounded by Historical New England Towns

48 peaks rise more than 4,000 feet in the White Mountains National Forest, making them New England’s tallest mountains. The 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington is the tallest in the entire Northeast; from the top, you can get amazing views of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, and, on especially clear days, Canada. To get to the top, you can either attempt the challenging hike up or take a scenic drive along the Mount Washington Auto Road. For a less daunting climb, there’s Crawford Notch State Park, where you can hike the Mount Willard trail. It climbs 3.9 miles to a summit with gorgeous vistas. Some ski resorts also make their home in the park, including the popular Wildcat Mountain near Mount Washington.

A handful of small historical towns dot the surrounding lowlands, and they all serve as excellent gateways to rugged adventure in the national forest. Many became popular vacation spots during the railroad era, when Bostonians and New Yorkers flocked here to exchange stifling city streets for mountain air.

Hotel with "Boston" level service and standards Amazing dinner at the restaurant and the balcony was a great addition to our stay. We would definitely stay here again; we were in town for a funeral. I am unaware of another hotel of this stature, service, and cleanliness in the Gorham area!!!

Great experience at the Glen House Comfy beds and pillows. Cozy and quiet room. Restaurant downstairs. Great views from the hotel. Room service always kept up with the rooms. The bar and restaurant had a great view of Mount Washington. Had no issues at all during my 2 week stay. Super recommended!

A ski lounge near Mt. Washington This is a great 4 star hotel. I would rate it higher if the pool was indeed swimmable (it's too short) and if there was a jacuzzi to relax in at the end of the day or when the weather is bad. There is a great lounge with fireplace and a bar with original cocktails made by Neal, an innovative mixer. The food was very good. Make sure to ask for discounted room rates such as AAA and other plans.
