Vancouver, Washington: Artistic Downtown Along the Columbia River

The Cascade Range mountains and Columbia River define the scenery in Vancouver, which lies just across the river from Portland, Oregon. Naturally, much of the town’s recreational activity is focused on the outdoors. You can enjoy a hike to a waterfall or a picnic lunch at Moulton Falls Regional Park, or take a short drive to famous Multnomah Falls. If you’re thirsty, head down to Portland to check out the city’s top-notch craft breweries.

Back in downtown Vancouver, you’ll find a thriving arts scene, with a special emphasis on Polynesian works, thanks to the city’s strong Hawaiian presence. Downtown is also home to one of the nation’s few Brautigan Libraries, dedicated to preserving unpublished works of literature. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site—a living history museum with hands-on activities and a massive archaeology collection—is located right along the banks of the Columbia River.

The front desk staff is very young, so I expected horrible customer service and I got the exact opposite. Jared was awesome. Zack was nice. Didn't get any other names, but all were professional and SMILED! Dave in engineering was friendly, helpful, & funny and is now a master spider killer. The room was great too.

Great hotel find in Vancouver, Washington Absolutely fabulous hotel. Quite charming and very professional staff. The on-site restaurant was incredible. As a former chef, I appreciate all of the culinary attention to detail. Even the steak bites with greens was fabulous, served with a wonderful Demi glace.

Great for larger groups I stayed at Heathman Lodge for a conference. We all agreed that everyone who helped and served us were wonderful! We were made to feel welcome and comfortable. The food was catered by the lodge and was delicious. The service was always with a smile. The front desk staff was so friendly! The only frustration was the weight room. It was not all that impressive, and only one of the two treadmills was working. That isn’t enough for me to dock the lodge any points. Everything else made up for it. I’d be happy if our group had our conference here again.

Disappointing As others have said, this hotel is nice but does need to move forward. When we arrived after a very long flight and drive we couldn’t find reception. It appeared that the drive through drop off had been turned into a seating area and there were no signs or directions to help, first fail. We finally found where to go and had a lot of luggage so had to just park as near as we could and find a trolley. This area was opened up the day we left so least loading the car was easier. There was only one lift we found which was very very slow. The foyer is also very noisy as the Hudson restaurant overspills into that area. We were told we had a large king room and when we went in, yes it was nice and spacious with a huge sofa to chill on. However when we looked out of the massive window, rather than a lovely balcony or even a view of the car park we were squashed in the corner with just a view of a pitched roof so made our room very dark with very limited natural light. The patio room next door was being refurbed so there dirty windows and dust. We never actually saw anyone fixing it either. The coffee making area was very tiny so instead of putting it into the room, it’s squished by the bathroom. What we hadn’t realised and not easy to see, the coffee in reception and parking there is a fee for so beware of that - you get nothing for free. There is a pool but was heavily used by children so there appeared to be no adult time. It also looked tired. Everywhere does look like it needs redecorating and bedding is tired and one slow lift clearly was a hindrance to some. As we were only one floor up we used stairs apart from check in and out. What did notice was someone had used a table upstairs for chilling as there was seating but a dirty wine glass and beer glass stayed there for three days! Didn’t make us feel that cleanliness was priority. We only had one breakfast at Hudson bar which was nice but at $65 we thought that not viable for our stay, so we brought some breakfast to have in our room each day. Washing up was a challenge so bought own tea towel. As others have said cleaning is on request so we opted not to have it and just asked for coffee pods as needed. Fridge did need a defrost, as couldn’t put any ice packs into the ice box. Staff are ok but again depends who you get, needs to be more across the board than intermittent.
