Hotel at a Glance: The Historic Powhatan Resort by Diamond Resorts

The Historic Powhatan Resort’s manor house dates back to 1735—an etching of “1643” on one of its bricks refers to the year of its land grant from King Charles I. Built with 20-inch-thick brick walls and distinctive T-shaped chimneys, the two-story structure survived the American Revolution and a fire during the Civil War that ravaged the surrounding plantation. Today, the house stands amid carefully manicured gardens and rolling hills on the resort’s more than 250 wooded acres, the perfect setting for families visiting Williamsburg for its historic colonial attractions.

  • Now you’re cookin’: All units have fully equipped kitchens stocked with dishes and cutlery.
  • Make a splash in one of the outdoor and indoor pools to cool down or swim laps for a morning workout.
  • Take a sip of a freshly mixed cocktail or soft drink at the poolside bar.
  • Practice your game on the tennis, basketball, or volleyball courts. Guests must supply own sports equipment.

Williamsburg, Virginia: Historic Colonial Town

Part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia (along with Jamestown and Yorktown), Williamsburg was the capital of the colony. It played a central role during the American Revolution—American forces gathered here in 1781 to march to Yorktown for the war’s final battle. The city pays homage to this patriotic past with a living museum where fifers march in Revolutionary War regalia and costumed actors portray everyday colonists. Historians have carefully preserved and restored dozens of 18th-century structures within the town; buildings of note include the home of George Wythe, the first Virginian to sign the Declaration of Independence. Yorktown Battlefield is to the east; here, park rangers tell the story of the Revolutionary War’s final siege.

The room is spacious and comfortable. I like having my own kitchen so I can save some money and cook my own meals. I was there for a cycling event so there was plenty of room for my bike and gear and made it easy to get ready and on the trail.

Bring your kitchen scissors Overall this resort is fabulous, but there were a few things that detract from a 5 star review. First the positives. We had a 2 bedroom upstairs unit which was very clean and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. The swimming pool area was very good. The adult only pool was wonderful. It was so nice to not to have children screaming and jumping in and splashing . The hot tub was great. We liked the security measures. Security was seen around the site and came when we had an issue with someone parking in the wrong spaces. The negatives were the front desk. When you have a long drive, it would be nice to see a friendly face when checking in. The staff were very aloof and check in seems interminable. A very weird thing was that there were no kitchen scissors. When we asked for them, we were told it is"policy" not to have them. We used knives instead! A magnifying mirror would be nice in the bathroom Another thing Hilton are missing out on was the strange opening hours of the cabana af the pool. No one seemed to know if it would open. On our last week, it opened on Sunday and then not again until Friday. The queues were huge showing how popular it could be if it actually opened more regularly. Powhatan plantation is very near to Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Monticello marketplace is about 5 mins drive away with supermarkets and other shops. Many restaurants were within 15 mins drive. All in all, a very good place to stay.

Cloud pools, drab rooms, and unpleasant stay As others have mentioned, convenient location with nice grounds. However, this is not a vacation club caliber resort. The rooms are incredibly outdated with the interior being very dark and drab. Gaps under the doors led to ants and spiders in the hotel room. The floor/ceiling is paper thin, and loud footsteps from neighbors kept us awake at night. We were also disappointed in the pools -the water was incredibly cloudy and there is a permanent sign warning you that the water may fade your swimsuit. I’d expect better from a Hilton property! Overall as another reviewer mentioned, it feels like the quality of a Motel 6. Very disappointing.
