Hotel at a Glance: The Inn at Crestwood

In 1948, Claus Moberg purchased a 30-acre apple orchard in North Carolina’s High Country, where he built a summer cottage for his family. In 2004, the estate was transformed into The Inn at Crestwood, where guests can admire the property’s mountain views and be close to the charming towns of Boone and Blowing Rock, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway. The original design is still evident throughout the spacious inn, which displays Moberg’s original artwork and floor plans.

  • Where you’ll stay: a standard king room in the villa building or a select double-queen room that looks out on the woods.
  • Southern-inspired dishes dominate the menu at The Table Restaurant, open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 5.30 p.m. - 9 p.m.
  • Spa facilities include a lap pool.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina: Scenic Hikes and Skiing in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Blowing Rock sits on the edge of the 500,000-acre Pisgah National Forest in northeastern North Carolina. The town, named for a rock formation, is a home base for outdoor recreation in the Blue Ridge Mountains—especially hiking, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and horseback riding. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, a historic estate on 3,600 acres of forests and meadows, has 26 miles of carriage roads designated for walking and horseback riding. To see the sights from a car, head to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic motorway through the Appalachians.

Aside from the parkway, there’s plenty to do year-round here, from whitewater rafting and fly-fishing in the summer to cross-country and downhill skiing in the cooler months. About 25 miles northwest of Blowing Rock is Beech Mountain Resort, a popular ski spot with 17 trails for all skill levels. According to Fodor’s, it’s the highest ski area in the eastern United States, at 5,500 feet above sea level. Back in town, Blowing Rock’s Main Street is lined with antique shops, boutiques, and upscale bistros.

AWFUL. HAD 3 BUGS IN OUR ROOM. 2 IN THE BED _ AND THAT’S JUST THE BEGINNING This was one of the worst places I’ve ever stayed. The only positive thing I can say is that the people are nice. They are, however, not the best at customer service. There was only 1 person available to check people in or out, get ice (there is no way to get it yourself), recommend things to do (we were told that they didn’t know about the restaurants in the area and there wasn’t much), or any other service you might need performed. There was no breakfast, the restaurant was closed, and no microwave, refrigerator, or full coffee maker in the roomThe hotel itself seems to be an old house (or tries to seem that way). Which can be charming. This isn’t. It has a run down feeling to it. There is 1 very slow elevator. The area is stunningly beautiful. Our view was not. The in-window air conditioner worked but was horribly noisy. BUT THE WORST THING WAS THE DEAD BUG WE FOUND IN OUR BED THE FIRST NIGHT. NOT TO MENTION THE TWO LIVE ONES WE FOUND THE NEXT DAY! I know things can happen but seriously?!!! We were there for a wedding so we’re very busy but NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

Fuggedaboutit!!! Tired, run down, poorly maintained, restaurant and bar closed, no housekeeping available, appears to be primarily used for special event space e.g. weddings. We paid more for a deluxe king room with mountain view and got a view of handicap parking space at back of the building. Mountain view is limited and available only from the common space patio and bar which was restricted to wedding guests only. Extremely poor value. Breakfast was an inedible offering in a brown paper bag. Best part of our two night visit was a view of the Inn from our rear view mirror.
