Venice Beach, Los Angeles: Colorful Boardwalk and Wide Beaches

In the late 1890s, tobacco magnate Abbot Kinney set out to create a resort town–theme park hybrid that was reminiscent of Venice, Italy. He chose a marshy area of Los Angeles near the beach and hired construction crews to dig out canals so that gondolas could carry tourists to and fro. Kinney brought on architects to design hotels and stores with a distinctly Italian feel. He also added Kinney Pier, with attractions including a dance hall, auditorium, and aquarium. By the 1950s, the area had fallen into disrepair, but Venice was revitalized after an influx of hippies and artists moved in during the 1970s. Today, the Ocean Front Walk remains a prime spot for people-watching—it's a bustling blend of musicians, artists, street vendors, skateboarders, and only-in-LA eccentrics.

If you get tired of lounging on the sands of Venice Beach, you can hop on the 26-mile bike path to ride up the coast to sunny Santa Monica. This beachfront locale is best known for its namesake pier, which juts into the Pacific Ocean and hums with lively amusement park attractions, including a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, and a carousel from the 1920s.

Bought a Groupon for one night at this hotel, pre-paid for it and then was still charged by the hotel for the full night’s stay without any indication from the front desk or any attempt by the company to correct for this. Got it rectified after only I spotted the double charge on my CC systems a month later.

Fun hotel Loved the king room with sitting area. Fun decor and great outdoor space-ping pong, lounging pool hot tub. Close to several restaurants. Only disappointment was the gym not opening until 9am, way too late to get to use. Otherwise enjoyed the stay.

Hidden Gem Very eclectic place, just a walk away from Venice Beach or the Marina, it has the look you would expect from 60's-70's. Very clean and even though the furniture looked like it was from the 60's it looked new. (even has a rotary phone) Very quiet, been there 3 times now and not a sound through the night. Highly recomend even if just for the expierience.

Great place to stay! Great place to stay. The rooms are spacious and well-kept, and the staff are both nice and helpful. The whole place feels clean and unique. The beds were really comfortable. The location is also really good, we were able to go to move around quickly and easily.
