Tannersville, New York: Quaint Village Secluded by Catskill Mountains
A walk down Tannersville’s quaint Main Street feels a bit like stepping back in time, and it will likely stay that way. This downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the whole town remains secluded by the towering Catskill Mountains. That doesn’t mean Tannersville is without its modern quirks. Some of its historical buildings are painted in vibrant, contrasting hues and patterns, a pet project of local artist Elena Patterson. Behind the late Victorian and art-deco façades, you’ll find restaurants and shops.
The village’s surroundings offer plenty of outdoor adventure. Hunter Mountain Resort has 55 skiing and snowboarding trails sprawled out over three mountains. During warmer seasons, these peaks transform into popular spots for hiking, mountain biking, and ziplining. The area’s natural beauty goes beyond the rugged mountains, as the town sits within the Catskill Forest Preserve, nearly 290,000 acres dotted with waterfalls, lakes, and meadows. Wildlife ranging from larger mammals such as bobcats and white-tailed deer to smaller muskrat make their homes here. The park’s 98 peaks form quite a skyline, rising more than 3,000 feet in elevation. You can explore the park and its many small towns—Stone Ridge, High Falls, and Woodstock among them—via 18 hiking trails that cut through the mountains.
