Long Beach, California: Art, Architecture, and the Historic Queen Mary

One of Long Beach’s most iconic attractions floats in the harbor across the bay: the Queen Mary, a former ocean liner and current museum-hotel hybrid. Built in the early 1930s as a luxury liner for the wealthy elite, the Queen Mary was transformed into a troopship during World War II. After nearly two more decades of civilian service, the ship retired to Long Beach. Thousands of annual visitors take guided tours of the boat, which is larger than the Titanic.

Back on land, independent playhouses and art galleries line the streets of the East Village Arts District. On the second Saturday of each month, the neighborhood hosts an art walk where galleries, boutiques, and cafés stay open late and local artists display original works. Long Beach's architecture also has its own appeal. Geometry buffs may marvel at the Walter Pyramid sports arena, as well as the aptly named Skinny House at 708 Gladys Avenue, a 10-foot-wide structure reportedly built on a bet.

Our trip was amazing. We absolutely loved everything about the queen Mary the rooms were spotless. The whole boat was incredibly clean, super impressed with that the historical history of this boat. It was amazing, and the fact that you can walk around by yourself and tour almost every part of it was unbelievable and so super cool. This is probably by far one of my favorite trips.!!

A stunning blast from the past It is a special experience to visit and stay on The Queen Mary. It has been beautifully maintained in its original style and is a superb example of Art Deco. As soon as you board, you are whisked away into a bygone era. It feels and looks exactly as it would have. You can imagine passengers dressed up and parading around in their finest clothes. We ate in the Chowder House restaurant, which was excellent. In contrast, the breakfast was a poor basic selection and just average quality. Is recommend going to see this ship.

Closest hotel to Carnival Cruise port; short walk away. Lots of interesting history. She’s a short walk to Carnival Cruise port. Her history is very interesting but as a hotel she’s average. Walls have no ability to muffle anything. We were freezing cold which was ok when sleeping but not so ok when getting in and out of shower. The provided shampoo in M035 was empty and body wash was nearly so. Had to “shakedown” the room for an electrical outlet other than the one in the bathroom and at the vanity. Finally found the third one on the built in dresser cabinet but it was not in plain view. Bring your own water bottle and go to coffee shop on Panorama deck and fill your bottle there or pay $4 for bottled water. No review for food. Great decor as it is all cool wood and built-ins. Bed sloped toward the headboard but was moderately comfortable. Overall-shes average stay but I’m happy to pay to keep her history alive. *using $1 water taxi from Long Beach side of the bay was very easy!! Queen Mary has map for free. Can also use Passport bus but it can be crowded.

Cool for the experience, but needs some TLC We thought it would be cool to stay in a historic cruise liner, so we booked 1 night aboard the Queen Mary. It was fun to explore the ship and see some of the displays and historical areas. The rooms were bigger than I expected, clean and comfortable. However, as a hotel specifically, there was alot to be desired. The place needs some renovating / TLC overall. The carpets are worn thin, the AC wasn't adequate, there's not much lighting in the room and definitely not enough outlets. The staff is friendly and courteous, however. The walls are thin, and sound travels easily. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to bring ear plugs. There was a loud argument that sounded like it was right outside the door - but when I looked, there was no one near by.
